FCFL Takes On Lip Sync Battle

Posted on June 28, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

You read that right, fans! FCFL Team Owner | Fan Captain Prince Royce appeared on last night’s episode of Lip Sync Battle to face off against Lele Pons. h pulled out a rendition of “Versace on the Floor” by Bruno Mars to start off with, before moving on to a show-stopping version of “Fireball” by Pitbull. We think we can speak for everyone that saw his performance when we say that Prince Royce makes a better Pitbull than Mr. 305 himself. It was a no brainer for the fans to make the decision, crowning Prince Royce Lip Sync Battle champion. That’s right, we’ve got a champion on our hands before the season even starts. Let’s just hope that he wears his belt proudly to each game!

We want to hear from the fans, if we set up a Lip Sync Battle-type competition between all the Team Owners | Fan Captains that have been named, who do you think would take home the title of champion? Sure Bobby Bones has some moves after competing on Dancing with the Stars and sings in his band, but we get the feeling that Greg Miller from Kinda Funny might have some hidden talents to showcase on stage. Maybe Richard Sherman is secretly the best dancer and is just waiting for a platform to wow us with his skills. But at the end of the day, if we were the fans, we’d keep our money on Prince Royce after that performance!

FAN Take: Getting All Access

Posted on June 26, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Every year we look forward to getting to tune in to HBO’s Hard Knocks series, watching how much of a hot mess a team is behind the scenes. Earlier this month, it was announced that the next team to be featured is the Oakland Raiders, who finished with a depressing 4-12 record last season. The series first premiered in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens before featuring the Dallas Cowboys (2002, 2008), Kansas City Chiefs (2007), Cincinnati Bengals (2009, 2013), New York Jets (2010), Miami Dolphins (2012), Atlanta Falcons (2014), Houston Texans (2015), Los Angeles Rams (2016), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2017) and Cleveland Browns (2018). There has been some concern over the series getting stale, but it seems like there may be a solution coming from none other than the team owners. Similar to how the NHL teams are shown preparing for the Winter Classic, fans would get to see two teams going into a big game a few times over the course of a season.

We love the idea of getting to see what happens behind the scenes as two teams get ready to face off! Is this the kind of content fans want to see in the FCFL? Do you want an inside look at the trash talk between teams or how the teams get hyped up in the hours before a game? Would you prefer to focus on how the teams train week-in and week-out? We want you to feel like you’re getting all access, so let us know what you want to see!

Power To The Fans!

What Do the MLS All-Star Game and FCFL Have In Common?

Posted on June 25, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

While the USWNT has been KILLING it in the FIFA Women’s World Cup (their quarter-final match against France is this Friday), the MLS announced the All-Star roster for their upcoming match against Atletico Madrid. While the starters have not yet been named by All-Star Head Coach James O’Connor (Orlando City SC), we do know who the fans voted for, who was a Coach’s pick, and who was named to the team courtesy of the Commissioner. With representation from 18 different teams, just about every fan will have a reason to be rooting for the All-Stars over Atletico Madrid. The game is July 31 in Orlando, FL at 5pm PT/8pm ET and can be watched on FS1. For full bios on each of the athletes selected, visit MLSSoccer.com

Ahead of the match, fans can catch FCFL Team Owner | Fan Captain Prince Royce headlining the MLS All-Star Concert. Even better? The concert is FREE! Just make sure you’re at Wall Street Plaza on Saturday, July 27 in Orlando! Prior to the concert, fans will have the opportunity to join the viewing party for the Orlando City SC v. New England Revolution match at 4pm PT/ 7pm ET, with the concert following immediately thereafter. These events kick off just one of five days-worth of soccer celebrations and fan experiences leading up to the big game. We know you already know, but we LOVE to see organizations giving back to their fans. Add in one of our Team Owners and you’ve got the perfect way to honor the fans!

Bucks and Jazz Win Big at 2019 NBA Awards

Posted on June 25, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

The Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors may have made it to the NBA Finals, but they weren’t really a factor at last night’s 2019 NBA Awards. Instead, the Milwaukee Bucks and Utah Jazz cleaned up with a total of three awards per team – out of a total of 13 actual awards. Aside from Giannis Antetokounmpo bringing home the MVP, the other big highlight was getting to see both Larry Bird and Magic Johnson be honored for their lifetime achievements. We aren’t going to lie, while we were happy to see Bird and Johnson be celebrated, we were surprised it hadn’t happened sooner.

The full list of winners is below:

  • Most Valuable Player: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks
  • Defensive Player of the Year: Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz
  • Coach of the Year: Mike Budenholzer, Milwaukee Bucks
  • Sixth Man of the Year: Lou Williams, Los Angeles Clippers
  • Most Improved Player: Pascal Siakam, Toronto Raptors
  • Rookie of the Year: Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks
  • Sager Strong Award: Robin Roberts
  • Lifetime Achievement: Larry Bird and Magic Johnson
  • Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year: Mike Conley, Utah Jazz
  • NBA Sportsmanship Award: Mike Conley, Utah Jazz
  • NBA Cares Community Assist Award: Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards
  • Executive of the Year: Jon Horst, Milwaukee Bucks
  • Hustle Award: Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics

Of course, we have the NFL Honors, ESPYs, and MLB Awards, but we can’t wait to see what happens at the end of our inaugural season! What kind of awards do we expect to see the fans giving out to our players? Without a doubt, there will be an MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Fan of the Year, but what about honoring a player or team for highest execution rate of fan-called plays? We think the fans would love to see that awarded, after all, they do want to see their plays flawlessly executed. They might also want to see an award given for best trash talking, although we think the competition could be tough between all the players, the fans, AND the Team Owners | Fan Captains! The possibilities are endless. Let us know what you think!

That’s One Way To Court A Player

Posted on June 24, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

When LeBron James decided it was time to leave Cleveland, billboards popped up around different cities trying to show him a little love. Last year, Lakers fans made it clear they wanted to see Paul George in purple and gold. While nothing is official, no matter how much people speculate, it looks like LA is pulling out all the stops for Kawhi Leonard in an effort to convince him to take his contract option and become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Billboards from some Clippers fans (with money to burn, apparently) popped up over the weekend on the 5 freeway, not too far from Staples Center, encouraging him to ditch his ‘King of the North’ title for ‘King of SoCal.’

We take it that ‘shouting it from the rooftops’ is no longer a thing, and if you want to show you’re interested in a player, it needs to be done with billboards. We have to admit though, it might make sense to put some of those up IN Toronto, where Kawhi is more likely to see them. Now, we aren’t expecting our fans to do anything THIS drastic when it comes to luring in players to the league, but we do think they might organize a strong social campaign. Whether it’s just getting a hashtag trending or even throwing $20 at some paid advertising on Instagram, we can see our fans taking a more digital approach. After all, everything from our league votes to coach interviews to watching the games will be done digitally!

Winners and Losers of the 2019 NBA Draft

Posted on June 21, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

We could probably spend all day analyzing every pick of the 2019 NBA Draft last night, but hey, it’s the first day of Summer and we know you just want the highlights. That being said, let’s look at some of the biggest winners and losers of last night!

Winner: New Orleans Pelicans.

They got Zion Williamson, need we say more? With their fancy trade work, they’ve also set themselves up with plenty of chances to find a brand new replacement for Anthony Davis… even though they got all the players in the world from the Lakers in THAT trade. You go, Pelicans!

Loser: Bol Bol.

Every year there is someone at EVERY major league draft that becomes “that guy.” You know, the one everyone is expecting to go early in the first round and is just left sitting there somewhere until pick No. 30 or so. Unfortunately, last night that guy was Bol Bol. Ultimately, he landed at No. 44 with the Miami Heat. At least he can get over the low draft position on the beautiful beaches of Miami, right?

Winner: Atlanta Hawks.

After making a deal with the Pelicans, Atlanta swooped in at No. 4 to pick up De’Andre Hunter, followed by Cam Reddish at No. 10. Sure, Reddish didn’t shine at Duke this year, but he’s got size and athleticism on his side.

Loser: Phoenix Suns.

As we mentioned previously, the Phoenix Suns had the 6th pick in the draft, which they traded away to Minnesota for the No. 11 pick and Dario Saric. Then they drafted Cameron Johnson, who has a history of hip injuries and was expected to go much lower in the draft. It’s okay Phoenix, everyone has to be a loser at some point in draft history.

Winner: Memphis Grizzlies.

Welcome to Memphis, Ja Morant! His new team is still in a rebuilding stage (the team went 55-109 the last two seasons), but he has some solid talent in Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke to help him along the way.

What do you think fans, do you agree? Or do you have your own separate list of winners and losers? Let us know!

FAN Take: Trophies Are For Surfing, Right?

Posted on June 19, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

When we see athletes win the crown achievement of their respective sports, we typically see then hoisting their championship trophy above their heads, kissing it, or in the case of the Stanley Cup, drinking from it. This is the case for MOST sports, but apparently not rugby. Following Toulouse’s victory over Clermont in the Top 14 final, star player Romain Ntamack used the Bouclier de Brennus trophy to go skimboarding. The size of the trophy certainly lends itself to this use, but we imagine the saltwater isn’t great for the hardware. This was the team’s first win since 2012, so they’ve been going all out with the celebrations – clearly.

Translation: Romain Ntamack surfed with the Brennus Shield and this is the best use that has been made of this trophy.

We asked the fans recently what they’d like the FCFL trophy to look like – should it be traditional, or should it be something completely crazy and designed by the fans? But we want to know where the fans stand on treatment of the trophy. Do you care if the players drink or eat from it? Do you care if they take it out to a club after winning it, only to get covered with champagne (we imagine)? Or do you want the players to treat it with the utmost respect, and far, far away from the beach? Let us know!

Report: LaVar Ball Might Be Saltier Than the Ocean

Posted on June 17, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Where do we even begin with this? Over the weekend we shared that the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Anthony Davis after sending Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, AND two other future first-round picks to New Orleans. That’s right, the Lakers gave all of that up for LeBron James to have his way and get Davis on the team. We’re not even going to get into the reasoning behind that one, and leave it at how happy we are that the fans are in control at the FCFL, not whoever is calling the shots in Los Angeles.

Some seriously devoted fans captured LaVar’s reaction to the news while attending a Drew League game to cheer on his other son, LaMelo. Let’s just say he didn’t look happy. Maybe it’s because he didn’t have the opportunity to make sure Lonzo went to Phoenix, but it likely has more to do with the fact that the Lakers thought they were better off without him in general. Following the game, he spoke to reporters, saying, “It will be the worst move the Lakers ever did in their life and they will never win another championship. Guarantee it.” He followed up with, “I don’t regret. I’m going to have fun with it, because I told you it was crashing down. Now it completely crashed, but at least my son got off the boat before the thing exploded.” And for the record, yes, this is the same guy that proceeded to appear on ESPN’s First Take this morning for obvious reasons – until he made everyone uncomfortable with a comment directed at host Molly Qerim while avoiding answering questions about the trade that brought him there in the first place.

Do we think the fans would put up with LaVar’s antics in the FCFL? Absolutely not. While some of the fans may egg him on so they can continue to troll them, we think the majority would want him gone. We wouldn’t be surprised if the fans called for his removal from the Virtual Front Office, should he join attempting to orchestrate a trade to another team for that player. We think they might find themselves agreeing with Liz Roscher when she said, “All sports everywhere for all times in the past and future don’t need him.” If there’s anything we have learned in the last 72 hours, it’s that we hope our fans never end up as salty as LaVar.

Is Brett Favre Coming Back To Football?

Posted on June 18, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Earlier today, fans got excited over the news that Brett Favre was returning to the NFL – specifically, on the field. That’s right, the 20-year pro posted that he is going to suit up and take over the starting QB position for one of the NFL teams that could use a little help! Psych. Sorry guys, it’s not really happening. Unfortunately, someone hacked the legendary quarterback’s Instagram account and led to plenty of broken hearts. While we feel a *little* bad for those who fell for the post, we have to question your judgement – he’s 49. That age would be a stretch even for a kicker, and we know those guys’ careers go on forever.

But now we’re wondering who the fans would love to see come out of retirement and grace the field once again? Jason Witten already announced his comeback, do you think Tony Romo or Matt Forte still have a few years left in them? We’re sure if he really wanted to, Calvin Johnson could add some more stats to his “Megatron” status. While all these could be fun prospects, we’re sure that there are a good number of fans out there that think once you hang up your jersey, it’s hung up for good. Let this serve as a reminder to all you fans out there – don’t use “password” for all your passwords!

FCFL Team Owner Preps For Fortnite Pro-Am

Posted on June 14, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

It’s that time of the year again and the Fornite Pro-Am is back! This year we are excited to see FCFL Team Owner | Fan Captain Marshawn Lynch throw his hat into the ring for the tournament this weekend! Marshawn will be teaming up with Ninja, arguably the most popular streamer out there, especially for Fortnite. Marshawn recently shared a clip of him and Ninja getting prepared for the tournament, and frankly, we would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that. Other notable athletes and celebrities you’ll see in this year’s tournament include JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kenneth Faried, Jay Mewes, Hannibal Buress, Blake Martinez, and Brendon Urie. For the full list of partners and how to watch the tournament on Twitch, click here.

We think the fans would love to see some of their players and Team Owners | Fan Captains participate in next year’s tournament, but what about having an FCFL-wide version? It wouldn’t have to be Fortnite, but any game the fans and players are passionate about. We think the fans would jump at the opportunity to stream with the people they spend all season making decisions for. As for the Fortnite Pro-Am, we hope the fans will join us in wishing Marshawn the best of luck!
