FAN Take: Modifying The Fan Experience

Posted on May 13, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

One of the few highlights of quarantine has been Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl’s storytelling, but this week he took his talents to The Atlantic, writing about the hole that the lack of live music has left in our lives. We feel that, just as strongly with live music as we do with live sports (what a surprise), and know the fans do too. But thankfully, artists are taking notice and doing what they can. While it may not be live, per se, people are still experiencing concerts in a different way. Some artists are doing livestreams, others are making past recordings of their concerts available on their YouTube channels, and a select few are doing special concert events in Fortnite.

We’ve previously discussed the impact that VR elements have added to live events for both fans in the stands and those watching from the comfort of home – from an augmented reality K-pop group performing at League of Legends Worlds to the Baltimore Ravens unleashing a bird to soar across the stadium. At the FCFL, we’re all about amplifying the league experience for the digital fan, so we need your help here! We want to know what would amplify the experience of every game for you. Do you want to feel truly immersed into the game with VR elements? Do you want to see those elements utilized to help you feel more connected to your specific team? Or the game you’re watching as a whole? Let us know, fans! At this point, anything is possible!

NFL Divisional Weekend Round Up – The Yellow Line IS NOT Official

Posted on January 13, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

To say this weekend did not go as we all expected would be a massive understatement. We’re still trying to wrap our minds around the downfall of the Baltimore Ravens and how the Houston Texans blew such a massive lead. Selfishly, we wanted to see the Seattle Seahawks take down the Green Bay Packers so we could witness a rematch between former teammates and FCFL Team Owners } Fan Captains Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman. We guess we’ll just have to wait until their teams face off in the inaugural season of the FCFL! Unfortunately, the fans went 2-2 once more, but lets get a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Minnesota Vikings vs. San Francisco 49ers
  • Tennessee Titans vs. Baltimore Ravens
  • Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers

Let’s check out some the most insane moments from this weekend – you know, just to hold us over until the NFL Conference Championships.

  • Richard Sherman continued to prove why he’s the best corner in the game!

  • Jonnu Smith pulled out an impressive TD for the Titans early on in the game, as shown below, but the real star of this moment was Dan Fouts and his *interesting* commentary

  • While the Texans were busy losing their 24-point lead over the Chiefs, Eric Fisher was busy giving himself a beer shower to celebrate one of many TDs for the Chiefs.

  • We don’t know who needs to hear this, but the yellow first-down marker is not always accurate. Maybe we need to say it a little bit louder for the Seahawks fans in the back that are still saying Jimmy Graham was short in the game-changing play that secured the Packers a win.

  • We hate to see BeastMode go, but we do love to see him impart some of his wisdom to all the athletes out there listening.

Let Me See That Playbook

Posted on December 9, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

This had to be one of the most exciting weeks in the NFL, even if some of us at FCFL had to watch our teams suffer heartbreaking losses – but one thing is for sure: Buffalo Bills CB Tre’Davious White getting his hands on the Baltimore Ravens playbook was one of our favorite moments of the week, let alone the whole season. That’s right, the Ravens playbook accidentally blew onto the field, and White was quick to pick it up and look it over – before a referee snatched it from his hands. While we doubt White was able to gain any useful insight from the whole three seconds he had to look through the playbook, the internet was quick to point out White’s actions secured him a spot on the Patriots roster next year. Was this a dirty move on White’s part? Eh, not really. Like we said, unless he has some crazy photographic memory, he likely didn’t learn anything useful to report back to his team. Had he run from refs while flipping the pages, then we’d question his ethics. If anything, he just wanted to provide some entertainment for all the Bills fans that were getting tired of seeing Lamar Jackson run all over their team.

So what if this happened in the Fan Controlled Football League? Well, it needs to be said that fans, players, and coaching staff alike will have a hard time trying to cheat by manipulating votes for a specific play to be called. Between everything happening in REAL time and the fact that each of the four play options presented to the team on offense will be solid choices, it’s not even worth it to attempt stacking the votes. But that being said, would the fans want to see their teams attempt to get a less-than-fair advantage anyways? For the most part, we’re going to say no. We know that our fans will be spending more time focusing their team and less on how to sabotage the competition… but we also know some of our fans are classic internet trolls and would love to try and mess with the other team any chance they get. Especially if the latter is part of the Kinda Funny team, which has already gone on record saying they want to send pizzas in the middle of the night to their opponent’s QB, the night before the game.

NFL Week 12 Round Up – Not Half Bad

Posted on November 26, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Well, this week didn’t go as well for the fans as last week, but then again, nobody would have expected for the Washington Redskins to pull out a win over the Detroit Lions. So, we really can’t fault you on that one. This week, the fans ended up going 8-5-1, bringing their season record to 105-58-13. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Cleveland Browns
  • Detroit Lions vs. Washington Redskins
  • Oakland Raiders vs. New York Jets
  • New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears
  • Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Philadelphia Eagles
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons
  • Denver Broncos vs. Buffalo Bills
  • Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans
  • Dallas Cowboys vs. New England Patriots
  • Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers – clearly, you fans love seeing polls end in ties
  • Baltimore Ravens vs. Los Angeles Rams

Don’t forget, fans! NFL Week 13 picks open up TOMORROW MORNING on Twitter! And now for the best part: our favorite moments from Week 12!

  • This fan sneaking a whole pumpkin pie and can of Reddi Whip into the Bears game on Sunday is hands down, the best thing we’ve seen all week. Don’t @ us – you know it’s true.
  • Players tend to get a little flashy when they arrive at the stadium prior to the game, but the Houston Texans LBs just raised the bar this week by rolling up in Mortal Kombat outfits, and it was everything we didn’t know we needed in our lives.
  • Will the NFL Officials ever stop making terrible calls and/or stop missing blatant calls? We get the feeling they’re the ones that post “New Year, New Me” every January and not change a single thing, as made evident by this bogus tripping call on the Cowboys.
  • There’s been A LOT of hype around Lamar Jackson (especially from Mark Ingram), but let’s not forget about Marcus Peters, who really didn’t want the Rams to have anything to celebrate in last night’s game.
  • Technically this didn’t happen during the Packers-49ers game, but when we first saw the below clip we were pretty impressed…

Posted on November 19, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Well done, fans! With only one missed pick, this week was easily the best for the fans thus far – but we just know there will be a week where they lock in every correct pick. And we fully expect that to happen before the Cincinnati Bengals pull out their first win of the season 😏 This week, the fans ended up going 13-1, bringing their season record to 97-53-12. NFL Week Ten Round Up – And Then There Were None

Posted on November 12, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Leave it to the fans to accurately predict the San Francisco 49ers winning streak coming to an end in a weekend FULL of upsets! But we’ll dive more into that exciting game tomorrow in our FAN Take 😉. Now that all the undefeated teams have lost and the Miami Dolphins have won, we’re just waiting on the Cincinnati Bengals to FINALLY bring home a win. This week, the fans ended up going 4-7-2, bringing their season record to 84-52-12. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Los Angeles Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders
  • New York Giants vs. New York Jets – we wonder if there will ever be a week where the fans aren’t split on a pick 🙄
  • Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints
  • Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tennessee Titans
  • Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Buffalo Bills vs. Cleveland Browns
  • Arizona Cardinals vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Indianapolis Colts
  • Carolina Panthers vs. Green Bay Packers
  • Los Angeles Rams vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – really, fans?!
  • Minnesota Vikings vs. Dallas Cowboys
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers

Don’t forget, fans! NFL Week 11 picks open up TOMORROW on Twitter! And now for our favorite part: our favorite moments from Week 10!

  • Yesterday we shared a blog all about Dak Prescott and his *unique* warm-up before the Cowboys loss to the Vikings – but we weren’t expecting to see Nick Bosa doing his own version.
  • The only post-game interview response that can come close to Team Owner and Fan Captain Marshawn’s classic “I’m just here so I don’t get fined,” is this.
  • The New Orleans Saints trolled their rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, with some New England Patriots highlights during Sunday’s game… but the only problem is that the 7-1 Saints were dominated by the 1-7 Falcons. Insert pun about the Saints eating crow, here.
  • Get yourself a teammate that hypes you up the way Mark Ingram hypes up Lamar Jackson.
  • Like we said above, we’ll dive into the MNF game in tomorrow’s FAN Take, but that missed field goal landing in the tunnel was too good not to include here.

The Patriots Have Fallen

Posted on November 4, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

The time has finally come – the New England Patriots are no longer undefeated! Yesterday, Tom Brady and his team lost to the underrated Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. The 37-20 loss for the Patriots will likely leave their defense with nightmares for a week after they allowed themselves to be blown out at home. Who knows, maybe this reality check will serve up some humble pie for the 6-time Super Bowl Champions – and push the Ravens to taking down the only remaining undefeated team in the league: the San Francisco 49ers.

What does that mean for the rest of the season? Well, for starters – ANYTHING Is possible. Sure, the Patriots typically have the easiest schedule every year considering how awful their division is, but if the Super Bowl favorites can lose to the Ravens the same week that the Miami Dolphins finally pull out a win, the Vince Lombardi Trophy could go to anyone. Well, anyone but the Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. We just hope the fans remember this during the inaugural season of the FCFL. Every team will have solid talent on their rosters, so everything comes down to them. Their play calling abilities will be what makes or break their team’s season. So, no matter how good one team may seem, the fans can change everything with their voting power. What else did you expect from the Fan Controlled Football League?

FAN Take: Happy Birthday, You’re Benched

Posted on October 30, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

The Cincinnati Bengals have had a rough first half of the NFL Regular Season, to say the least. They’ve come so close to winning games against the Seattle Seahawks (-1), Buffalo Bills (-4), Arizona Cardinals (-3), and Baltimore Ravens (-6) – but lost every single time. Realistically, we don’t see them pulling out a win until their games against the New York Jets (Week 13), Cleveland Browns (Weeks 14 & 17), or Miami Dolphins (Week 16). But, that all could change now that they have a new starting QB: rookie, Ryan Finley. You might be wondering, what happened to Andy Dalton? He didn’t fall victim to the NFL trade deadlines yesterday, but he was benched. On his birthday. Yes, really. What we really want to know is if the Bengals delivered the news to the quarterback on his birthday cake – could you imagine?!

While we feel for Dalton being benched on what should be a happy day for him, at the end of the day, it’s just business. With an 0-8 start, nobody should be shocked by the Bengals decision. Sure, the timing wasn’t ideal, especially since the Bengals have a bye this week, but they needed to get Finley up to speed and ready to go for their second game against the Ravens in Week 10. Naturally, we’re now wondering if the fans would be as ruthless if they were in charge. Fans, would you show no mercy with benching a player on their birthday? Maybe even sending him back to the practice squad? Or what about firing a coach? Are birthdays fair game as long as they aren’t a monumental one, like 50, for example? Or, like the Bengals, do you think it’s business as usual – no matter whose birthday it is?

Power To The Fans!

NFL Week Six Round Up – The Fans Are Split

Posted on October 8, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Good news for fans of the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots – your teams are still undefeated! Bad news for fans of the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins – your teams are still winless. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for you. The fans seemed to have a tough time making hard decisions on some of these match-ups. The votes were split on three separate games, so they ended up with 6-5-3 with their picks, bringing their season record to 52-33-7. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • New York Giants vs. New England Patriots
  • Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – fans were split on this match-up!
  • Washington Redskins vs. Miami Dolphins – another tie for the fans
  • New Orleans Saints vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Cleveland Browns
  • Philadelphia Eagles vs. Minnesota Vikings
  • Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Atlanta Falcons vs. Arizona Cardinals – one more tie this week
  • San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams
  • Tennessee Titans vs. Denver Broncos
  • Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Jets
  • Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Los Angeles Chargers
  • Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers

Don’t forget, fans! NFL Week 7 picks open up TOMORROW on Twitter! And now, here are some of our favorite moments from Week 6:

  • Eli Manning might be benched, but that doesn’t mean he won’t continue to give the internet nothing but amazing opportunities to poke fun at him.

  • Move over, *NSYNC. The Seahawks not only defeated the Browns, but they proved they’re better dancers than all of you.
  • Russell Wilson led his team to a TD without the aid of his helmet communication system. It’s *almost* like he’s earning his paycheck out there!
  • The Detroit Lions showed up at Lambeau to remind you why their season isn’t dead with a perfectly executed Flea Flicker for their first play of the game!
  • There were a LOT of things going wrong in the Lions-Packers game last night, but the only thing worse than the officiating had to be Rodgers’ receiving core.
