The NBA is BACK!

Sure, we may be in the middle of the NFL season, but the NBA is officially back in action tonight! The double-header for opening night features the Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans and LA Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers. We can only hope that these games turn out better than the season opener for the NFL, which shouldn’t be hard to do.

So what can fans expect this season? Maybe the question should be ‘who can the fans expect to show up this season.’ Well, not the Number One draft pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, for starters. Yesterday the New Orleans Pelicans announced that Zion Williamson will be out for a couple months after having surgery to repair a torn right lateral meniscus. And per the ESPN Breaking News alert we all got on our phones this morning, the Golden State Warriors aren’t expecting to see Klay Thompson on the court at all this season as he recovers from a torn ACL. On top of that, Russell Westbrook keeps managing to hurt his shooting hand. Pull it together, guys.

Who should they put their money on? Well, Seerat Sohi, Chris Haynes, Vincent Goodwill and Ben Rohrbach all picked the Los Angeles Clippers to take home the championship. Rohrbach was the only one to pick the Philadelphia 76ers as the other team in the NBA Finals – the rest selected the Milwaukee Bucks. While these four from Yahoo Sports are literally paid for their opinion, we still have a hard time believing the Clippers will end the season on a high note. Of course, the opinions we care most about come from the fans. Let us know in the comments who you think will make it to the 2020 NBA Finals!

FAN Take: Is Basketball Worth More Than Football?

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

As if you didn’t already know, NBA Free Agency has already proven to be WILD. Aside from the world still waiting to hear on where Kawhi Leonard will be playing next season, guys like Kemba Walker, Klay Thompson and Tobias Harris are bringing in serious money for their next 3-5 years of playing. With all these contracts coming in above the $100M mark, we can’t help but notice that the top NFL players are making just under half of that, at the very most. It’s not surprising that in response to all these new contracts, Houston Texans wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, posed this question: Do NFL players deserve top NBA players contracts?

Yes, technically, the guys in the NBA have more games to play each season, but it can be easily argued that football players put their bodies through so much more. On that point alone, it makes sense that top NFL players – not just the quarterbacks – should be getting compensated at a higher level. Considering that the Brooklyn Nets just dedicated a combined $305M for Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, it’s reasonable to think that someone like Michael Thomas (New Orleans Saints), Davante Adams (Green Bay Packers), or Zach Ertz (Philadelphia Eagles) should be able to get PAID when renegotiating their contracts. But that’s just our opinion fans, what do you think? Do you think that football players deserve just as much, if not more, than some of these top NBA players? Or do you think comparing athletes from the two sports is like comparing apples to oranges? What about certain positions having maximum earning amounts? Let us know what you think is fair!

RIP to Hopes and Dreams of Knicks Fans Everywhere

Posted on July 1, 2019

We’re not sure where to begin with this one. We could outline a long list of all the things the New York Knicks have done wrong recently, but that could take all day. Offering our condolences to Knicks fans everywhere seems like the only sensible choice at this point. We’re sorry that you will likely have to go through yet another rough season. We just hope that things WILL get better, you’ve been through enough as it is.

Free agency is normally the most exciting time, aside from the playoffs, in the NBA. But definitely not for the Knicks. The 17-65 team missed their shot snagging Zion Williamson in the draft after running Kristaps Porzingis out of New York, and now they’ve already set themselves up for a miserable off-season, despite the large amount of cap room they created to bring in some serious talent. They finally had a shot at a big name player that could really help develop their roster of children – okay they aren’t children, but they ARE the youngest team in the league. But, in true Knicks fashion, they blew it by not ponying up for a max deal to secure Kevin Durant. Really. The guys that gave Tim Hardaway Jr. a $71M deal a couple years ago thought Durant’s price tag was too high. This is only going to hurt the fans more, as they watch their rivals, the Brooklyn Nets, welcome Durant, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan with open arms.

A few months ago, a fan was banned from Madison Square Garden for imploring James Dolan to sell the Knicks. He just wanted to be heard and see his team win more than 17 games in one season, can you blame him? So what happens when the fans have to get involved in order for something to change? While we have faith in our Team Owners | Fan Captains that they will work with you fans to do what’s right for the team, there’s always a possibility that one of them will go rogue and sink your team. What do you do then? We imagine our fans won’t put up with it. We imagine they will band together to not only align themselves on votes, but to let US know how they feel! Should any Team Owner do their team and fans wrong, we are expecting to see our DMs full. Remember, this is the FAN Controlled Football League – you’re in control!

The 2019 NBA Draft Order Is Here!

Posted on May 15, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

For anyone that missed it, last night was the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery. Although the draft itself won’t be held until next month, June 20th to be exact, the fans now have a little over a month to explore every possibility of what their teams will do in the first round. With a ton of talent heading into the draft this year, including Zion Williamson, a lot of fans are hoping to see their teams turn it around next season. And with that, the order for the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft is as follows:

  1. New Orleans Pelicans
  2. Memphis Grizzlies
  3. New York Knicks
  4. Los Angeles Lakers
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers
  6. Phoenix Suns
  7. Chicago Bulls
  8. Atlanta Hawks
  9. Washington Wizards
  10. Atlanta Hawks (they get a second pick through a previous trade with Dallas)
  11. Minnesota Timberwolves
  12. Charlotte Hornets
  13. Miami Heat
  14. Boston Celtics (through a trade with Sacramento)
  15. Detroit Pistons
  16. Orlando Magic
  17. Brooklyn Nets
  18. Indiana Pacers
  19. San Antonio Spurs
  20. Boston Celtics (through a trade with the LA Clippers)
  21. Oklahoma City Thunder
  22. Boston Celtics (okay now they’re just getting greedy)
  23. Utah Jazz
  24. Philadelphia 76ers
  25. Portland Trailblazers
  26. Cleveland Cavaliers (through a trade with Houston)
  27. Brooklyn Nets (through a trade with Denver)
  28. Golden State Warriors
  29. San Antonio Spurs (through a trade with Toronto)
  30. Milwaukee Bucks

For anyone that’s predominantly a football fan, the NBA Draft doesn’t take playoff results into consideration when determining draft order. Meaning, if you’re fans of the Knicks, Cavs, or Suns, you not only have an abysmal record, but you also don’t have the draft placement you really need. Not to be immature, but it sucks to suck. While we have not determined how the draft order will be selected in the FCFL, we’re curious to know what the fans want to see. We think fans will want to see a lottery-style for the first season. But for every season after that? We think there’s going to be a split consensus. We think some of the fans will want to keep the lottery style moving forward, while others will want something more similar to what we see in the NFL. That’s our best guess for now, but if you feel strongly one way or the other fans, let us know!

FAN Take – Staying Busy In The Off Season

By Annalece Montgomery

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

In June, Brooklyn Nets Forward Kenneth Faried took home second place at the Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am Tournament. Who would have thought he had such mad skills, let alone to be runner up to the duo of Ninja and DJ Marshmellow? He took home a cool $250,000 in prize money, with the stipulation that it had to be used for a charitable purpose. Following the competition at E3, he was excited to finish second and happy that he worked as well as he did with his replacement partner, CourageJD – his original partner, Summit1G came down with a sickness shortly before the event.

And with that, he’s used his winnings to establish the Kenneth Faried HAT foundation – the ‘HAT’ stands for “humble, appreciative and thankful.” While it’s in its infancy, Faried only said that the foundation would focus on using sports, including basketball, to help young people.

Speaking to SportTechie’s Joe Lemire, he said “I’m trying to teach kids to be this way through basketball and the fundamentals of basketball: teamwork, being a partner to somebody, being respectful, listening to a leader and not just a coach as a leader. Some players step up and become leaders. We’re trying to teach that through basketball and other sports.” We’re looking forward to seeing Faried’s foundation grow and impact the community.

Fans, how do you want to see our athletes keep busy in the off season? Should they take a page from Kenneth Faried’s book? Should they focus on giving back to their community? Should they do whatever relaxes them, including playing video games like Fortnite? How about combining their favorite recreational activities with giving back? We’d love to hear from you!
