FAN Take: On the Clock

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Last night the NBA made its triumphant return with two stellar games: the defending champion Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans, and LA Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers (read: NFL, this is what opening night should look like). The main difference between last season and last night? TNT made an adjustment to their shot clock. Instead of keeping it statically positioned along the bottom of the screen like every other network has done since the dawn of time, they added a white shot clock on the floor above the foul line. TNT has actually been testing this out during its preseason games, but didn’t get as much attention until last night because we all know preseason doesn’t count. This change didn’t get rid of the static red-backed clock in the bottom right corner, but it does allow fans to keep their eye on the clock and the action without having to look around the screen. In the final five seconds, the color of the clock also changes, giving the game more of a video game feel – something we know all about.

We’ve heard many people describe the FCFL as the real-life version of Madden, so we’re absolutely open to making aesthetic changes to the game streams to mirror that idea and make the viewing experience be absolutely incredible for the fans. So, what kind of changes would the fans want to see? A play clock to run down on the field behind the quarterback? The first down marker to change color as the offense runs out of downs? Maybe a countdown timer that moves and shakes as time runs out for fans to call their next play? Let us know fans – we’re building this league for YOU!

The NBA is BACK!

Sure, we may be in the middle of the NFL season, but the NBA is officially back in action tonight! The double-header for opening night features the Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans and LA Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers. We can only hope that these games turn out better than the season opener for the NFL, which shouldn’t be hard to do.

So what can fans expect this season? Maybe the question should be ‘who can the fans expect to show up this season.’ Well, not the Number One draft pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, for starters. Yesterday the New Orleans Pelicans announced that Zion Williamson will be out for a couple months after having surgery to repair a torn right lateral meniscus. And per the ESPN Breaking News alert we all got on our phones this morning, the Golden State Warriors aren’t expecting to see Klay Thompson on the court at all this season as he recovers from a torn ACL. On top of that, Russell Westbrook keeps managing to hurt his shooting hand. Pull it together, guys.

Who should they put their money on? Well, Seerat Sohi, Chris Haynes, Vincent Goodwill and Ben Rohrbach all picked the Los Angeles Clippers to take home the championship. Rohrbach was the only one to pick the Philadelphia 76ers as the other team in the NBA Finals – the rest selected the Milwaukee Bucks. While these four from Yahoo Sports are literally paid for their opinion, we still have a hard time believing the Clippers will end the season on a high note. That’s One Way To Court A Player

When LeBron James decided it was time to leave Cleveland, billboards popped up around different cities trying to show him a little love. Last year, Lakers fans made it clear they wanted to see Paul George in purple and gold. While nothing is official, no matter how much people speculate, it looks like LA is pulling out all the stops for Kawhi Leonard in an effort to convince him to take his contract option and become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Billboards from some Clippers fans (with money to burn, apparently) popped up over the weekend on the 5 freeway, not too far from Staples Center, encouraging him to ditch his ‘King of the North’ title for ‘King of SoCal.’

We take it that ‘shouting it from the rooftops’ is no longer a thing, and if you want to show you’re interested in a player, it needs to be done with billboards. We have to admit though, it might make sense to put some of those up IN Toronto, where Kawhi is more likely to see them. Now, we aren’t expecting our fans to do anything THIS drastic when it comes to luring in players to the league, but we do think they might organize a strong social campaign. Whether it’s just getting a hashtag trending or even throwing $20 at some paid advertising on Instagram, we can see our fans taking a more digital approach. After all, everything from our league votes to coach interviews to watching the games will be done digitally!
