Last Dance With MJ

Posted on April 20, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

ESPN did us all a huge favor by dropping The Last Dance two months early, with the first two episodes airing last night. The 10-part series chronicles Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls – the good, the bad, and the Dennis Rodman Vegas trip. Fans were pretty excited for its early release, treating the premiere as an entire event, even planning their outfits for themselves and family members to wear while posted up in front of their televisions. We won’t spoil the first two episodes for you, but we highly encourage you to check them out before the next two drop on Sunday.

What other dynasty team, iconic moment or unreal athlete would the fans want to see ESPN cover? The Office’s Michael Scott, maybe? We’re kidding – although the spoof trailer did have us contemplating binging the show for what feels like the 100th time. We’re sure they’d be into a deep dive on Walter Payton, Bill Russell, or Wayne Gretzky – all absolutely amazing in their respective sports. But we’re going to go out on a limb and say they want to know everything about the greatest season in the Indoor Football League – 2017. You know the one, where our proof of concept team, the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles came to life, paving the way for this league to launch 😏 That is – until we’ve completed our inaugural season, in which case there would definitely need to be a follow up.

Pour One Out for the XFL

Posted on April 13, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

It’s time to add the XFL to the list of things COVID-19 has ruined. On Friday, it was announced that the XFL had laid off all their employees, and have no plans for a return in 2021. We’re going to miss the mid-game sideline interviews, the interesting kickoff rules (even If we don’t love kicking), and live play reviews. We’re still holding out hope for the XFL to make another go of it. Their 2.0 version was fun – whether you were watching the action on the field, the sidelines, or in the stands. Who knows, maybe they don’t have plans for 2021 because they’re just waiting to see what the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and others are going to do with their seasons. After all, it seems like shifts in season dates for the next year, at the very least, are inevitable.

While we may have roasted the end of the AAF (just a little bit!), we are sad to hear about the end of the XFL. It’s one thing for a league to not do well because of its own shortcomings, but it’s entirely different when a global pandemic destroys its future and potential for success. That is why Darren Rovell’s tweet on Friday comparing the number of games played between the AAF and XFL stung more than it should have. Never fear, the DC Defenders were quick to stand up for the league as a whole, and fire back with some serious snark. Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE us some Darren Rovell, but we love snarky burns even more.

Do we think the fans are going to miss the XFL? Yes. How can you not miss giant beer snakes? We’re sure fans were more than willing to ‘pour one out’ for the league and make their own beer snakes at home. Do we think the fans want to see the XFL make another go of it, once we all have a clear view of the future? Absolutely! We firmly believe fans always need more football in their lives. But more importantly, do we think the fans are ready for the return of sports? DUH!

Call Him ‘Shaq Exotic’

Posted on March 30, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Okay, so we’ve all been in quarantine for awhile now, depending on where you are while reading this, but the one thing that seems to have kept everyone sane during this time is the release of Tiger King. We could talk for hours about how insane this show is, but we want to focus on one particular moment: the appearance by Shaq.

In the video, Shaq refers to Joe Exotic as his ‘main man’ and jokes about being gifted one of the tiger cubs. Understandably, some fans got pretty upset to see the NBA Hall of Famer paying to play with these animals. So it should come as no surprise that he was quick to clear things up on his podcast. He explained that not only is he not friends with Joe, but he provided donations for the “tiger’s foods and all that.” We’ll leave it to the fans to decide if his comments were good enough.

The good news about everyone having time to binge watch shows like Tiger King, is that we think there are going to be a LOT of interesting team name suggestions that come out of this quarantine period. Sure, ‘Tiger King’ will probably be an option submitted for every team (we’re expecting quite a few for Mike Tyson’s team), but we want to see something a little more creative from the fans – we know you have it in you! We think ‘Baghavan Bones’ and ‘Raging Mullets’ for Bobby Bones’ team and ‘Tiger Prince’ for Prince Royce are some decent options, but we know you can do better! Let’s see what you’ve got!

FAN Take: Boosting Fan Experience For the Digital Fan

Posted on March 11, 2020

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Right now, the entire world is watching and reacting to the spread of COVID-19, or the Coronavirus. Major events like SXSW and E3 have been cancelled, music festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach are being rescheduled for October, and many sporting events have been canceled or postponed. As this pandemic continues to grow, we’re sure the list of the events impacted will continue to increase – which obviously creates concern with the NBA Finals just ahead, along with the return of MLB, March Madness, and the Olympic Games.

Last week when the NBA was considering hosting games without fans, LeBron James said he wouldn’t be playing if they aren’t in attendance. Little did he know, while the media was asking that question, the NBA was discussing whether fans should be banned from games or if the games in question should just be postponed. He has since changed his tune, but we won’t lie, we were pretty irked by his initial comments. Why? Because the most important thing in sports IS the fans – and their safety! It doesn’t matter how they watch their teams perform, as long as they watch.

Here’s the special thing about the FCFL, this league was not just created to give fans more control of the sport they love, but it also caters to the digital fan. While we do have seating available at our games, we built this league around fans being able to watch from wherever they want, on whichever device they prefer. So, without actually being present for games of the FCFL, how can the fan experience be amplified? Do you want to be able to do one-on-one video chats with your favorite players in lieu of a meet and greet? Do you want to see more content available before and after games, to get a better feel for how the players felt going into a game or after certain plays? Or, just a crazy idea here, do you want to be able to participate in the half-time huddle? Let us know how we can make this league everything you want it to be, even if you’re self-quarantined at home!

Lookin’ Good, Miami

Posted on November 25, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

We know we’re in the thick of it with the NFL season, waiting to see which teams are going to punch their tickets to the playoffs, but something more important is going on: NBA teams are unveiling their alternate City Edition jerseys for the season. Some of them have put us to sleep and made us shake our head in disappointment – we’re looking at you, Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks. But any team that has yet to unveil their uniforms should just quietly release them, because nobody is going to top the Miami Heat. The ‘Vice Wave’ has hit Miami and the end result is fantastic – good enough for us to order one, even if we don’t identify as Miami fans. A+ to this design team for giving the fans everything they didn’t know they wanted in jersey.

For anyone still unsure, the Fan Controlled Football League puts fans in control – which absolutely includes team colors, logos, and jerseys. So will the fans bring it in the first season of the FCFL? Abso-freaking-lutely. In this league, bragging rights won’t stop just at who wins each game – they will also include best name, best color scheme, best jersey, best draft, etc. – you get the idea. We know our fans are competitive, so we’re completely confident that will carry over to the planning process. For some fans, we’re sure calling plays will just be the icing on the cake after creating their team’s brand from the ground up. One thing’s for sure – we know the fans will come up with something better than Dallas’ design for their team!

FAN Take: On the Clock

Posted on October 23, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Last night the NBA made its triumphant return with two stellar games: the defending champion Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans, and LA Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers (read: NFL, this is what opening night should look like). The main difference between last season and last night? TNT made an adjustment to their shot clock. Instead of keeping it statically positioned along the bottom of the screen like every other network has done since the dawn of time, they added a white shot clock on the floor above the foul line. TNT has actually been testing this out during its preseason games, but didn’t get as much attention until last night because we all know preseason doesn’t count. This change didn’t get rid of the static red-backed clock in the bottom right corner, but it does allow fans to keep their eye on the clock and the action without having to look around the screen. In the final five seconds, the color of the clock also changes, giving the game more of a video game feel – something we know all about.

We’ve heard many people describe the FCFL as the real-life version of Madden, so we’re absolutely open to making aesthetic changes to the game streams to mirror that idea and make the viewing experience be absolutely incredible for the fans. So, what kind of changes would the fans want to see? A play clock to run down on the field behind the quarterback? The first down marker to change color as the offense runs out of downs? Maybe a countdown timer that moves and shakes as time runs out for fans to call their next play? Let us know fans – we’re building this league for YOU!

Power To The Fans!

The NBA is BACK!

Posted on October 22, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Sure, we may be in the middle of the NFL season, but the NBA is officially back in action tonight! The double-header for opening night features the Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans and LA Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers. We can only hope that these games turn out better than the season opener for the NFL, which shouldn’t be hard to do.

So what can fans expect this season? Maybe the question should be ‘who can the fans expect to show up this season.’ Well, not the Number One draft pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, for starters. Yesterday the New Orleans Pelicans announced that Zion Williamson will be out for a couple months after having surgery to repair a torn right lateral meniscus. And per the ESPN Breaking News alert we all got on our phones this morning, the Golden State Warriors aren’t expecting to see Klay Thompson on the court at all this season as he recovers from a torn ACL. On top of that, Russell Westbrook keeps managing to hurt his shooting hand. Pull it together, guys.

Who should they put their money on? Well, Seerat Sohi, Chris Haynes, Vincent Goodwill and Ben Rohrbach all picked the Los Angeles Clippers to take home the championship. Rohrbach was the only one to pick the Philadelphia 76ers as the other team in the NBA Finals – the rest selected the Milwaukee Bucks. While these four from Yahoo Sports are literally paid for their opinion, we still have a hard time believing the Clippers will end the season on a high note. Of course, the opinions we care most about come from the fans. Let us know in the comments who you think will make it to the 2020 NBA Finals!

This Isn’t the Dream Team

Posted on August 15, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Remember the U.S. Men’s Basketball team in the 1992 Olympics? The team was stacked with stars like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, John Stockton, Chris Mullin, Charles Barkley, and David Robinson – and they were phenomenal. The U.S. team heading to the 2019 FIBA World Cup is the complete antithesis of that. Don’t believe us? Well, get comfortable because we have a story for you. Yesterday, USA Basketball hosted a camp, which included a scrimmage against a group of fringe NBA, G League and overseas players, coached by Jeff Van Gundy. You would think that this scrimmage would be a huge confidence boost for the team – except it wasn’t. The team, comprised of NBA players like Kemba Walker and Harrison Barnes, lost 17-36. Either this was Van Gundy’s lucky day, or we are in serious trouble when the 2019 FIBA World Cup tips off at the end of the month.

Normally we try to gauge what the fans would do if they were the coaches or the front office, but what if you were the athletes in this situation? How would you be able to rely on your teammates to show up and perform how they’re expected to on an international stage if you had such a terrible scrimmage? We think the fans would face the facts – they performed terrible. But we also think the fans would use that as a learning experience and focus on what really didn’t work for them. They might even opt for some additional training or a team night to reenforce that team bond. Just something to think about if you find your team in the FCFL struggling to come back from an embarrassing loss. You’ve got to be there for your team to figure out what isn’t working!

Time To Pony Up, Shaq

Posted on July 16, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

When will people learn that the internet is forever? Clearly not soon enough, and nobody knows that better than Shaquille O’Neal. This morning Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr tweeted an unearthed clip of Shaq making some strong statements in regards to his coach at the time, Phil Jackson. He quite literally said he would kiss the feet of any other coach that made four NBA Finals appearances within five years. For those of you that haven’t been counting, Kerr reached that milestone this year after previously making appearances in 2015, 2017, and 2018 as well. But don’t worry, Shaq knows his number is up. He responded to Kerr, letting him know that he’s game.

We love it when athletes make outlandish statements, only to have to back them up after being called out on social media. While we don’t necessarily want to watch Shaq kiss Kerr’s feat, we’re glad someone dug that clip up for the world to enjoy. We’d ask the fans if they want to see some interesting bets go on between our athletes and Team Owners | Fan Captains, but we already know the answer is a resounding yes. But we are curious to hear from the fans what kind of bets they want to see! Should Bobby Bones and Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller make an arrangement for the loser to go on the other’s show and publicly call themselves the biggest loser of the FCFL? What about Marshawn Lynch having to take Richard Sherman or Prince Royce to a VERY expensive dinner at the nicest restaurant in Las Vegas? We’re all ears for your suggestions!

The FCFL is Ready to BALL With the Mamba Sports Foundation

Posted on July 15, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

We know what you’re thinking – isn’t the Mamba Sports Foundation for basketball? Why would the Fan Controlled FOOTBALL League be doing anything with them? First of all, because they are freaking awesome. Second, because we don’t care about ONLY football. And third, just because it was started in part by NBA legend Kobe Bryant doesn’t mean they only focus on basketball. Broaden your minds, people.

But let’s get to the point. In conjunction with Quavo and Legends, the Mamba Sports Foundation is putting on the charity basketball game TOMORROW NIGHT, July 16th. That’s right, at 7:30pm PT, you’ll get to see the Migos rapper heading up one team, 2Chainz leading the other, and celebrities like Terrell Owens, Diplo, and Snoop Dogg rounding out the rosters. How could this NOT be the game of the year? That was a trick question; this is obviously going to be the game of the year. And where do we fit in to all of this? We are excited to announce that WE will be streaming the game! The ONLY place to catch all the action is on the FCFL Twitch channel.

What are you waiting for? Text LEGENDS to 313131 for more information on the game and how you can win the custom Nike Zoom Freak 1 kicks worn by Quavo in the game!
