The Saddest NFL Draft of All Time

Posted on April 27, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Like many of you, we spent the better part of our weekend glued to our TVs, watching the 2020 NFL Draft – all seven rounds, right down to Mr. Irrelevant. There were some amazing picks, some that left fans shaking their heads, but there’s one thing that they pretty much all had in common: tragic stories! At least, that’s what ESPN would have you believe with their draft coverage this year. They really committed to bumming their viewers out with calling out every personal tragedy and deceased family member in a pick’s life. We love hearing stories about athletes overcoming difficult circumstances and coming out as a better person… but we think ESPN took it too far. We’re starting to think they were hoping only those with the saddest backgrounds would get drafted.

Do the fans think ESPN when too far with their 2020 NFL Draft coverage? Yes.

What would the fans want us to focus on during the first-ever FCFL Draft? Probably anything other than personal tragedy. Here are some ideas for alternative topics to feature alongside their stats might not be the best, but we think the fans will agree that they are better than highlighting all the deaths one family has had to endure:

  • Are they a cat or a dog person?
  • Their biggest fear?
  • An embarrassing story about their childhood?
  • which character they pick in Super Smash Brothers?
  • Their favorite sports memory?
  • Which character from The Office they think is their soulmate?
  • Maybe even what they think about pineapple on pizza?

Let us know what else you’d like to know about your potential draft picks!

FAN Take: Draft Day

Posted on April 22, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

It’s NFL Draft Eve, normally one of our favorite times of the year, but things are clearly different this time around. There won’t be giant parties for the incoming rookies to celebrate, there won’t be crowds outside of every team’s stadium watching to see who they’re adding to their respective rosters, and there won’t be war rooms for every team to huddle up in and make their selections. But that’s okay, because at the end of the day, we’re going to see a bunch of talented players have their dreams come true. But no dreams will come true for Roger Goodell. His career-long dream of walking on stage without a large crowd booing him will have to wait another year at the very least, thanks to Bud Light.

Either way, we’re excited to see how teams use their picks to shape their 2020-21 season rosters, especially teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins, who practically need to rebuild their teams entirely to get back on track. We think this is something that our fans can resonate with, because they will be doing the same thing in our inaugural year – building their team from the ground up. We asked the fans to sound off on what position they would be gunning for with their first pick in the FCFL Draft, and it’s becoming pretty clear that our fans want to nail down the perfect quarterback before filling out the rest of the roster. But what about the next few picks? Are they going to move straight into snatching up all the best receivers? Or do they want to cycle through receivers, o-line and d-line? Maybe they want to take cues on what positions should come next from their respective offensive and defensive coordinators? Or even their Team Owners | Fan Captains? Let us know how you’d use your picks in the first-ever FCFL draft!

New Logo, Who Dis?

Posted on March 9, 2020

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Well fans, it looks like the Los Angeles Rams have just leaked their new logo, and well… it’s underwhelming to say the least. And before you say “oh there’s no way that’s real,” let me just stop you right there, because this has been confirmed by Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson. The logo first began making it’s rounds on Twitter Saturday morning in the form of the NFL Draft and OTA cap. Since then, mockups of the logo on its own have hit Imgur, Reddit and the rest of the internet. Aside from this logo looking like it’s actually meant for the LA Chargers, let’s think about all the other things it resembles: the LA Fitness logo, a golden retriever’s tail, the XFL Wildcats logo in a different color way, something you could find on obnoxious t-shirts from gift stores in LA, and possibly the early stages of rebranding for LAX.

Do we think the fans like this? LOL – no, no we do not. Do we think it makes the fans angry to know someone was paid a boatload of money to design a new logo, and have THIS be the final product? Yes. And most importantly, do we think our fans will do a better job when it comes to designing their team’s logos? Without a doubt! Our fans may come up with logos that range from clean and classic to wild and crazy, but we are positive that none of them will be as bad as this. Now just for kicks, here are some of our favorite fan reactions from Twitter and Reddit – listed in no particular order:

Bobby Bones Is Your Newest FCFL Team Owner

Posted on May 30, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Bobby Bones, the man with a face for both television and radio is headed to the FCFL. No, he won’t be playing (although Bobby, we aren’t opposed to watching you try out for the league) – he is your latest Team Owner | Fan Captain! Before you ask, “what does an American Idol mentor, iHeartRadio host, New York Times best-selling author and Dancing with the Stars champion know about football?” Well guess what? Bobby has not only been one half of Roddick and Bones on Fox Sports Radio, but you also saw him a couple weeks ago covering the 2019 NFL Draft on both ABC and ESPN.

Didn’t catch the draft or his season of Dancing with the Stars? Then we’re sure you’ve heard him on the radio. Not only does he serve as the Vice President, Creative Director of iHeartCountry, but his radio show, The Bobby Bones Show, is syndicated all over the country across 140 stations, making his show the #1 Country morning show with millions of weekly listeners. He’s also the frontman of his band, Bobby Bones & The Raging Idiots, making Bobby a modern-day renaissance man. Talk about a “jack of all trades!” Really, because that’s exactly how the folks at ESPN would describe him.

FCFL CEO Sohrob Farudi, commented, “Country music and football go hand in hand. Adding one of Country Music’s biggest personalities – who was just recently an NFL Draft correspondent for ABC and ESPN – to our roster of Team Owners just makes perfect sense. What a lot of people don’t realize about Bobby is that he has incredibly deep sports knowledge besides being a fierce competitor, which we all saw when he won Dancing with the Stars. We’re excited to have him bring his legion of country music fans to the FCFL.”

When asked about why he became an owner in the FCFL, Bones, shared, “I’ve been a pretty proud football fan for as long as I can remember, but becoming an owner in the FCFL was a no-brainer because the fans literally lead the way and call the shots. It’s innovative, different and I’m excited for the #BTeam to join me in another crazy journey.”

Let’s get you caught up quickly on the other Fan Captains – we’ve announced Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, Prince Royce, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, and Kinda Funny. We don’t want to put words in Bobby’s mouth, but we think he’s looking forward to watching Ochocinco crumble in the FCFL just like he did on Dancing with the Stars. That’s right, he competed on the show as well, just in a different season. And well, he didn’t take home the Mirror Ball Trophy like Bobby did. We’re not taking sides here, just stating the facts. But he’s not here JUST for the trash talk – Bobby’s team is all about playing this game strategically.

Does all of that sound good to you? Are you like Bobby and planning on crushing this season by being disciplined and learning everything you possibly can about the game, your players and your opponents? Then register for Bobby’s team here and start making your voice heard! Team name submissions are OPEN, so act fast before we move on to the first round of voting! We know you’re going to come up with something great, we can just feel it!

Ask Johnny

Posted on August 20, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

While everyone was trying to get through the last Monday before college football officially returns, the folks at Bleacher Report set up an AMA with Johnny Manziel. You may remember him as the guy who looked really unhappy while waiting for his NFL Draft Pick to come through in 2014 (as pictured above), just one more Cleveland Browns QB to completely flop, or as the guy who couldn’t seem to stay out of trouble no matter how hard he tried. Either way, you know him, and the results of his AMA were pure gold. Some of the important things we learned about good ol’ Johnny Football are:

  1. He thinks he can out-chug Baker Mayfield (honestly, so do we)
  2. He thinks Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco) is one of the best coaches in the NFL
  3. He hasn’t ruled out a return to football 👀
  4. He’s got either Clemson or Alabama winning it all this year
  5. He’s picking the New Orleans Saints for this year’s Super Bowl Champions

It’s been about a year since we last had the Co-Founders sit down for an AMA on Twitch, and are planning on doing another one in the near future. But who else would the fans be interested in hearing from? The obvious answer is our Team Owners | Fan Captains, which certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but what about the athletes trying out for the league? We think the fans would love the opportunity to pick the brains of some of these guys ahead of our draft, just to make sure they are the right fit for their team. We’re not going to throw out a Field of Dreams “if you build it, they will come,” reference, but… we want to give the fans what they want! Let us know what you think!

The 2019 NBA Draft Order Is Here!

Posted on May 15, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

For anyone that missed it, last night was the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery. Although the draft itself won’t be held until next month, June 20th to be exact, the fans now have a little over a month to explore every possibility of what their teams will do in the first round. With a ton of talent heading into the draft this year, including Zion Williamson, a lot of fans are hoping to see their teams turn it around next season. And with that, the order for the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft is as follows:

  1. New Orleans Pelicans
  2. Memphis Grizzlies
  3. New York Knicks
  4. Los Angeles Lakers
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers
  6. Phoenix Suns
  7. Chicago Bulls
  8. Atlanta Hawks
  9. Washington Wizards
  10. Atlanta Hawks (they get a second pick through a previous trade with Dallas)
  11. Minnesota Timberwolves
  12. Charlotte Hornets
  13. Miami Heat
  14. Boston Celtics (through a trade with Sacramento)
  15. Detroit Pistons
  16. Orlando Magic
  17. Brooklyn Nets
  18. Indiana Pacers
  19. San Antonio Spurs
  20. Boston Celtics (through a trade with the LA Clippers)
  21. Oklahoma City Thunder
  22. Boston Celtics (okay now they’re just getting greedy)
  23. Utah Jazz
  24. Philadelphia 76ers
  25. Portland Trailblazers
  26. Cleveland Cavaliers (through a trade with Houston)
  27. Brooklyn Nets (through a trade with Denver)
  28. Golden State Warriors
  29. San Antonio Spurs (through a trade with Toronto)
  30. Milwaukee Bucks

For anyone that’s predominantly a football fan, the NBA Draft doesn’t take playoff results into consideration when determining draft order. Meaning, if you’re fans of the Knicks, Cavs, or Suns, you not only have an abysmal record, but you also don’t have the draft placement you really need. Not to be immature, but it sucks to suck. While we have not determined how the draft order will be selected in the FCFL, we’re curious to know what the fans want to see. We think fans will want to see a lottery-style for the first season. But for every season after that? We think there’s going to be a split consensus. We think some of the fans will want to keep the lottery style moving forward, while others will want something more similar to what we see in the NFL. That’s our best guess for now, but if you feel strongly one way or the other fans, let us know!

FAN Take: Just For Laughs

Posted on May 8, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

A couple weeks ago at the NFL Draft, Boise State’s Deuce Dominguez headed to Nashville in the hopes of getting drafted to a team and having all his wildest dreams come true. Except Deuce Dominguez is not an actual football player, let alone an actual person. He had everyone fooled, with the help of some of his friends and a ton of dri-fit Boise State gear. Fans stopped him in the streets of Nashville to wish him luck ahead of the draft, take photos and get signatures. He even had rapper Schoolboy Q and actual NFL players Derrick Henry and Taylor Lewan thinking he was the real deal. He later changed into a suit and rocked a Packers draft cap, convincing even more people that he was actually drafted. An entire bar on Broadway began chanting his name in excitement. In the footage, he can be heard shouting that he “does it for the fans,” and to be honest, we felt that.

The real question here is what will our fans do to top this stunt? We’re not calling our fans trolls by any means, but you know you have some troll-like tendencies. We expect something more from you, not just a repeat of Deuce Dominguez’s prank. Will you band together to troll your team by repeatedly voting for the same play to irritate your offensive and defensive coordinators? Will you set your sights on the referees with some harmless fun and dress up in uniform when you come to the studio for a game? We know you may want to keep some of your ideas in pocket as an attempt to not ruin the surprise, but we want to hear what you’ve got!

Power to the Fans!

Best of the 2019 NFL Draft

Posted on April 29, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Over the last few days, we lived and breathed the NFL Draft for you, because we know it can be a LOT to take in. So we have you covered fans! Behold, some of the best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) moments of the 2019 NFL Draft!

Fans of the Oakland Raiders were left VERY confused by their team selecting Clemson DE Clelin Ferrell with their first pick.

The Buffalo Bills got draft pick approval from their biggest fan, Pancho Billa.

Reggie Wayne taunts Tennessee Titans fans.

Pete Carroll took off his shirt. Really.

Pat McAfee stole his job (back) from an orangutan.

The Baltimore Ravens made draft history in the sweetest way.

And one more moment that isn’t *technically* from the draft, but still very much draft related: Co-Founder Ray Austin called our bluff, and showed that he can still rock the hell out of the suit he wore to the 1997 NFL Draft. We know when to admit we’re wrong, Ray!

Overall, the draft was a ton of fun to watch, but now we’re just counting down the days until the inaugural FCFL Draft! We’re not going to spoil everything we have planned for you fans, but we want to know what you’re expecting from us. We think you’ll want to be able to immerse yourself in the experience. We’re pretty sure you plan on having a ton of fun while calling the shots. Are there any specifics that we’re missing? Let us know!

Things Got Awkward For Josh Rosen

Posted on April 26, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Last night during the NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals selected Oklahoma Sooners QB Kyler Murray with the first overall pick. A LOT of people thought this would happen, but we can think of one person that was hoping it wouldn’t: Josh Rosen. You know Rosen, the Arizona Cardinals’ current starting quarterback. But soon enough, we’ll probably know him as the former Cardinals’ QB. As of this morning, Rosen had decided to unfollow the Cardinals on his social media accounts, which is always a tell-tale sign that something is about to go on. Like a trade to the Miami Dolphins, for example.

Arizona’s new head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, had nothing but nice things to say about Rosen. He spoke earlier this week to reporters saying, “Yeah, I think Josh has done everything humanly possible to show what type of quarterback he is, what type of competitor he is. I’ve said it all along, I couldn’t be more impressed with his approach. He’s a great player. I mean, he was a top-10 pick for a reason. You see it out there how cerebral he is, how quickly he’s picked up our system.” With a statement like that, it had quite a few people questioning whether or not they would the Cardinals would move forward with picking Murray. Unfortunately for Rosen, it seems like these were just the nice things you say to someone before having them pack their bags.

We know we can be a little on the critical side, but deep down, we have hearts. We think our fans probably do too. So when it comes to letting a player go in favor for someone else, we imagine they would take a similar approach as Kingsbury. We think they will give that player some kind words of encouragement before dropping the hammer on them. We could be completely wrong, and you guys could be insanely savage, but either way, we look forward to seeing how you handle moments like this when you’re running the team!
