The End of an Era

Posted on December 16, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

December 15th, 2019 will be known as the day the Oakland Raiders played (and lost) their last game in the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum before moving to Las Vegas in the 2020 season. We’re sure plenty of the fans have their own memories from catching a game there, us included, but those may have been overshadowed by yesterday’s game. After the Raiders let the Jacksonville Jaguars score an unanswered 17 points, they ultimately lost 20-16. And then things got ugly. QB Derek Carr (you may have heard of him) headed to the infamous Black Hole to thank the fans, sign autographs, and do exactly what you WANT your QB to do after a game – but he was met with nothing but boos. Oh, it gets worse. Fans decided to treat the field as their own personal trash can (RIP to all those nachos) and got into actual fights with security.

Now obviously, we’re not expecting to see this exact same scenario happen in the Fan Controlled Football League with all of our teams playing in one location – but what about the fans’ reactions to losing a game that had a bigger meaning than what would happen in the post season? It’s one thing to suffer a tough loss on a game that probably should have been yours, but we understand when there’s something monumental that makes your loss hurt a little bit more. Whether it’s a player’s last game before retiring, a triumphant return from a player that was out with an injury, or a third-string player’s chance to start their first game, we get why the loss might sting a little more than usual. But enough for the fans to actually fight security or litter the field with trash? We have a really hard time believing OUR fans would do something like that. But if we’re wrong on this and you’re actually a bunch of sore-loser savages, let us know so we can beef up on security and put plastic tarps along the sidelines 😜. In the meantime, we’ll be taking bets on whether or not the fans’ behavior will change once the Raiders kick off in Las Vegas.

NFL Week 12 Round Up – Not Half Bad

Posted on November 26, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Well, this week didn’t go as well for the fans as last week, but then again, nobody would have expected for the Washington Redskins to pull out a win over the Detroit Lions. So, we really can’t fault you on that one. This week, the fans ended up going 8-5-1, bringing their season record to 105-58-13. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Cleveland Browns
  • Detroit Lions vs. Washington Redskins
  • Oakland Raiders vs. New York Jets
  • New York Giants vs. Chicago Bears
  • Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Philadelphia Eagles
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons
  • Denver Broncos vs. Buffalo Bills
  • Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans
  • Dallas Cowboys vs. New England Patriots
  • Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers – clearly, you fans love seeing polls end in ties
  • Baltimore Ravens vs. Los Angeles Rams

Don’t forget, fans! NFL Week 13 picks open up TOMORROW MORNING on Twitter! And now for the best part: our favorite moments from Week 12!

  • This fan sneaking a whole pumpkin pie and can of Reddi Whip into the Bears game on Sunday is hands down, the best thing we’ve seen all week. Don’t @ us – you know it’s true.
  • Players tend to get a little flashy when they arrive at the stadium prior to the game, but the Houston Texans LBs just raised the bar this week by rolling up in Mortal Kombat outfits, and it was everything we didn’t know we needed in our lives.
  • Will the NFL Officials ever stop making terrible calls and/or stop missing blatant calls? We get the feeling they’re the ones that post “New Year, New Me” every January and not change a single thing, as made evident by this bogus tripping call on the Cowboys.
  • There’s been A LOT of hype around Lamar Jackson (especially from Mark Ingram), but let’s not forget about Marcus Peters, who really didn’t want the Rams to have anything to celebrate in last night’s game.
  • Technically this didn’t happen during the Packers-49ers game, but when we first saw the below clip we were pretty impressed…

Well done, fans! With only one missed pick, this week was easily the best for the fans thus far – but we just know there will be a week where they lock in every correct pick. And we fully expect that to happen before the Cincinnati Bengals pull out their first win of the season 😏 This week, the fans ended up going 13-1, bringing their season record to 97-53-12. NFL Week Ten Round Up – And Then There Were None

Posted on November 12, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Leave it to the fans to accurately predict the San Francisco 49ers winning streak coming to an end in a weekend FULL of upsets! But we’ll dive more into that exciting game tomorrow in our FAN Take 😉. Now that all the undefeated teams have lost and the Miami Dolphins have won, we’re just waiting on the Cincinnati Bengals to FINALLY bring home a win. This week, the fans ended up going 4-7-2, bringing their season record to 84-52-12. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Los Angeles Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders
  • New York Giants vs. New York Jets – we wonder if there will ever be a week where the fans aren’t split on a pick 🙄
  • Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints
  • Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tennessee Titans
  • Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Buffalo Bills vs. Cleveland Browns
  • Arizona Cardinals vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Indianapolis Colts
  • Carolina Panthers vs. Green Bay Packers
  • Los Angeles Rams vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – really, fans?!
  • Minnesota Vikings vs. Dallas Cowboys
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers

Don’t forget, fans! NFL Week 11 picks open up TOMORROW on Twitter! And now for our favorite part: our favorite moments from Week 10!

  • Yesterday we shared a blog all about Dak Prescott and his *unique* warm-up before the Cowboys loss to the Vikings – but we weren’t expecting to see Nick Bosa doing his own version.
  • The only post-game interview response that can come close to Team Owner and Fan Captain Marshawn’s classic “I’m just here so I don’t get fined,” is this.
  • The New Orleans Saints trolled their rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, with some New England Patriots highlights during Sunday’s game… but the only problem is that the 7-1 Saints were dominated by the 1-7 Falcons. Insert pun about the Saints eating crow, here.
  • Get yourself a teammate that hypes you up the way Mark Ingram hypes up Lamar Jackson.
  • Like we said above, we’ll dive into the MNF game in tomorrow’s FAN Take, but that missed field goal landing in the tunnel was too good not to include here.

Sherman & Beastmode Reunited in the FCFL Owners Box

Originally published November 29, 2018

By Grant Cohen

We are beyond stoked to welcome Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman as the first two FCFL Team Owners and Fan Captains. Of course, both are Super Bowl Champs and future NFL HOF’ers, but, even more than that, they are great guys who have a passion for football and love being fans themselves.

What is particularly rad about their involvement with the FCFL is that they are not just passive owners of new teams in our league who will be sitting in the owners’ box eating lobster and wearing suits – I mean honestly, can you picture Marshawn suited up?? He came out to see our new potential venue this week and flew in on a Southwest flight rocking a hoodie that said “Beast Mode.”

Instead, as part of their role as Team Owner, they will also be serving as the Fan Captain – meaning they will be the head fan for their squads and will help their fanbases make the decisions for their team. In the coming weeks we will be announcing six more Team Owners / Fan Captains for each of the franchises in our inaugural season.

The fan involvement will start in early 2019 with Marshawn, Richard and the rest of the Fan Captains working with their team’s fans to come up with the best names, logos and color schemes for their teams. While Beast Mode and Sherman will certainly have their favorites and will help to pick the best options – their votes are worth just the same as their fans, because in the FCFL the fans call the shots and there are not any special powers for the Team Owners.

The teams will likely take on the personas of their Fan Captains, with Sherman’s reflecting his style as a highly-intelligent, trash-talking, shut-down defender, while Lynch’s squad will be built around the aura of Beast Mode, creating a hardnosed brand of smash-mouth football with a modern and brash team swagger.

And as the season approaches fans of each team will work with their Fan Captain to draft their team’s players and coaches, and when we take the field, fans will be calling the plays in real time. But they won’t be alone in their decision-making. The Fan Captains will be co-streaming their team’s games on Twitch where they will be providing commentary on what they are seeing develop on the field and guidance on what plays they think their fans should be calling… So get ready to hear Richard call a whole lot of the other team’s receivers “sorry” and for Marshawn to suggest runs up the middle on 3rd and 20.

Over the last couple of months we’ve been working with Richard, Marshawn and their respective teams on putting together the details around their involvement and we’ve been extremely impressed with how engaged both guys are. Not just with their fanbases, but also how much they’ve latched onto the concept of the FCFL – where the fans get to have their voice heard for reals.

When we explain the FCFL to people, the number one football situation they bring up is the ill-fated pass call that cost Marshawn and Richard’s Seahawks team the Super Bowl XLIX title. Recently we asked Marshawn what would have happened if the fans had been in charge that day and had called a run instead – not surprisingly he guaranteed it would have been a TD (actually he said it would have been 10 TD’s, which seems a bit extreme).

We are hard at work getting the other six Team Owners and Fan Captains locked in – some will be other familiar faces from the NFL and others will be famous fans from the wider world of entertainment, sports and gaming, as our goal is to create a league where fans of all kinds can find a team that they really connect with.

So if you have any ideas for folks that you think would make a killer Fan Captain – hit them up on Twitter and tell them to get involved, be sure to tag us @FCFLio and use the hashtag #PowerToTheFans so we can rally the support of all of our fans to get their attention!

NFL Week Eight Round Up – Fans Are Riding High

Posted on October 29, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

We’re officially at the halfway mark of the NFL Regular Season and if the fans’ ability to accurately pick games is any indicator of how they will do in the inaugural season of the Fan Controlled Football League, we’ve got nothing to worry about! Once again, the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers came out on top, and the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins are keeping their losing streak alive. Naturally, the fans called all four teams’ games correctly. Due to a split decision on the Oakland Raiders-Houston Texans game this week, the fans ended up going 12-2-1, bringing their season record to 74-39-8. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Washington Redskins vs. Minnesota Vikings
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Atlanta Falcons
  • Los Angeles Chargers vs. Chicago Bears
  • New York Giants vs. Detroit Lions
  • New York Jets vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Cincinnati Bengals vs. Los Angeles Rams
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Tennessee Titans
  • Philadelphia Eagles vs. Buffalo Bills
  • Denver Broncos vs. Indianapolis Colts
  • Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orleans Saints
  • Carolina Panthers vs. San Francisco 49ers
  • Oakland Raiders vs. Houston Texans *tie, we guess the fans just couldn’t pick
  • Cleveland Browns vs. New England Patriots
  • Green Bay Packers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Don’t forget, fans! NFL Week 9 picks open up TOMORROW on Twitter! And now, here are some of our favorite moments from Week 8:

  • Nick Bosa continues to strain his back by carrying the 49ers. We hope for the fans sake that he stays healthy for the remainder of the season.
  • The Jaguars achieved Troll Level 1000 when responding to Jets QB Sam Darnold’s statement on ‘seeing ghosts’ in their loss to the Patriots the week before. It should also be noted that prior to the game, a plane flew over the stadium with a banner that read ‘Gardner Minshew ain’t afraid of no ghosts.’

  • This Tennessee Titans cheerleader is outperforming the entire receiving core from the Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns combined.
  • Aaron Rodgers reminded everyone why he’s a Super Bowl MVP with this pass. Don’t lie, you all held your breath during this play too.
  • Saquon Barkley went full BEASTMODE on the field, tossing these guys out of his way. Marshawn, we think it’s time you sign some new athletes to your brand.
  • Oh, Baker. The Browns QB snubbed the San Francisco 49ers Team Captains during the pre-game coin toss, so Joey Bosa decided to get a little payback by ‘planting the flag’ in Santa Clara.
  • Sadly, Mason Rudolph sustained a concussion during the Steelers-Ravens game on Sunday. To make matters worse, the cart taking him off the field broke down and he ultimately had to be carried away. We get the feeling EVERY cart at EVERY stadium will be fully charged before Week 6 action kicks off.

  • Travis Kelce is all of us, getting fired up at coaches when you’re losing a game you SHOULD be winning.
  • And last, but certainly not least, the camera crew caught Jerry “Crypt Keeper” Jones channeling every Cowboys fan by getting frustrated with Dak Prescott.

NFL Week Four Round Up – What Just Happened?

Posted on October 1, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Talk about a week of upsets! Don’t worry fans, you weren’t the only ones to miss some of these picks. Who would have thought that Tampa Bay would take down the Los Angeles Rams? Or that the Cleveland Browns would beat the Baltimore Ravens? You still pulled off a winning record this week though! Fans are ending NFL Week 4 at 8-6-1, bringing their season record to 38-22-3. Now for a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers
  • Washington Redskins vs. New York Giants – Here’s your tie! The fans were split on who would take the win, but ultimately the Giants brought home the W.
  • Kansas City Chiefs vs. Detroit Lions
  • Tennessee Titans vs. Atlanta Falcons
  • Cleveland Browns vs. Baltimore Ravens
  • Oakland Raiders vs. Indianapolis Colts
  • New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills
  • Carolina Panthers vs. Houston Texans
  • Los Angeles Chargers vs. Miami Dolphins
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Los Angeles Rams
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals
  • Minnesota Vikings vs. Chicago Bears
  • Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Denver Broncos
  • Dallas Cowboys vs. New Orleans Saints
  • Cincinnati Bengals vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

This week felt like more of a fluke, but as always, we encourage the fans to do their research before making NFL Week 5 picks tomorrow on Twitter! And now, some highlights from the Week 3 action:

  • Literally no words are needed for this clip. Thank you to the internet for providing such quality content.

    This is too good 😂 #billbelichick 🎹 🎶

A post shared by Kelson Auger (@theboon06) on

  • Texans QB Deshaun Watson may have just secured his first job when the time comes to retire after breaking down the Panthers defense like a pro. If only his team’s coaching staff could see what he did, they may have pulled out a win.
  • Dak Prescott literally creating meme gold when throwing into quadruple coverage in a last-ditch attempt to defeat the New Orleans Saints. This might have been the most exciting moment of the week’s most boring game.
  • This fan that just RIPPED into the Atlanta Falcons at half time, living out every disgruntled fan’s dream.
  • This unbelievable pass from Matt Stafford. We’re still not sure how he made this sorcery happen, but we don’t see him pulling it off again any time soon.

Getting Down and Dirty

Posted on September 30, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Following what can only be described as one of the dirtiest hits we’ve seen in recent years, Oakland Raiders LB Vontaze Burfict was suspended by the NFL for the remainder of the season. In a game against the Indianapolis Colts, Burfict lowered his head and initiated a helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts TE Jack Doyle. While Burfitct certainly isn’t the only dirty player the league has ever seen (Ndamukong Suh, Richie Incognito, James Harrison, really, this list could go on and on), he seems to blatantly disregard rules the league has put in place to protect the players. And because of that, for the first time in awhile, we see fans supporting the NFL for their decisions – a usual rarity, especially with Roger Goodell serving as Commissioner. We’re sure the decision will be appealed, but if we could give Burfict any advice, it would be that he shouldn’t hold his breath.

In the Fan Controlled Football League, we aim to provide the fans with an entertaining experience, and we believe that can be achieved while also keeping players safe. We’re still building out our league rule book, but how do the fans want to handle blatant, aggressive hits like the one Burfict’s reputation has been built off of? Should a hit like the one we saw in last night’s game result in an immediate season suspension? We think a bulk of the fans would say yes. Others may call for a warning system, maybe something along the line of ‘three strikes, you’re out.’ Regardless of what you think is the appropriate action, let us know! We want to make sure your voices are heard and our players are safe!
