NFL’s 100th Season Kick Off Falls Flat

Well, that certainly wasn’t the game we were expecting from the NFL’s 100th season. Typically, the first game of the regular season features the Super Bowl Champions, which in this case, would have been the New England Patriots. But this year, the NFL decided to switch it up and feature the oldest rivalry they had, the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. Which is kind of fitting, because this is also the 100th season for both teams. The end result was lackluster to say the least. Between the Packers have the fewest yards in the first quarter since 1979 (-12 total, wow) and the Bears finding themselves in a 3rd and 40 situation, we wanted more from the game with a final score of 10-3.

Were the fans just excited to have regular season football back? Definitely, at least for a little while. But did they love the first game? Not so much. People were roasting the game on Twitter, and USA Today‘s Andy Nesbitt weren’t having it. As soon as the first flag was thrown in the first quarter, even we found ourselves thinking we could have gone without football a little longer. One thing is certain, in the FCFL we will do everything we can to make sure these match-ups are as entertaining as possible! Until our season has it’s ‘first snap,’ we’ll just hope for better quality of games this NFL season. At least the showdown between the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders on Monday night should be entertaining given all the drama Antonio Brown has caused over the last few weeks!

A Player Isn’t Always What He Seems

News broke that the Packers have just signed Olive Sagapolu as their newest DT. The name might not be ringing any bells for you, but chances are you’ve already seen him. The former Wisconsin Badger went viral last year after a video was shared of him doing a standing backflip on the beach. So what’s the big deal? Sagapolu weighs in at 336 pound and is 6’2, so he isn’t your typical gymnast by any means. He showed up for camp with the Packers this morning, but so far, hasn’t done any backflips on the field.

After watching this clip, we feel safe reminding you all not to judge a book by its cover. That couldn’t be more important for fans to remember as you all begin to scout out players and really think about who you want to draft to your team. The leanest guy won’t always be the fastest, and the biggest guy won’t always be the slowest! So do yourself a favor, don’t immediately pass on a guy – they might be able to surprise you!

FAN Take – Delivering Bad News

Posted on April 3, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

In December, we shared that the Green Bay Packers and Mike McCarthy had parted ways after he failed to bring the team to the playoffs for the second year in a row. Now, a few months later, McCarthy has come out saying that he wasn’t happy with how the Packers handled his firing.

In his first interview since being fired, he told ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that, “Frankly, no [he] did not” see it coming. He was called in to speak with team president Mark Murphy following a loss to the Arizona Cardinals at home. The mid-season firing was the first time the Packers had made a coaching change like that in over 60 years, so it is understandable why he didn’t see it coming at that exact moment.

He went on to say, “Every time I released an individual, you get your words right. There’s a personal component to it. You know he has a family. He’s family. There wasn’t any of that.” That has us wondering fans, when you’re the ones calling the shots, how do you want to deliver the bad news? If your Offensive Coordinator just isn’t cutting it anymore, do you want them to watch as you and your fellow fans decide his fate? Do you want someone at the league level to sit them down to break the news? Do you think your Team Owner | Fan Captain should pull them aside after a particularly terrible loss to give them a warning? You’re in the driver’s seat now fans, and you need to be prepared for how to handle making tough decisions!

Power To The Fans!
