NFL Divisional Weekend Round Up – The Yellow Line IS NOT Official

Posted on January 13, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

To say this weekend did not go as we all expected would be a massive understatement. We’re still trying to wrap our minds around the downfall of the Baltimore Ravens and how the Houston Texans blew such a massive lead. Selfishly, we wanted to see the Seattle Seahawks take down the Green Bay Packers so we could witness a rematch between former teammates and FCFL Team Owners } Fan Captains Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman. We guess we’ll just have to wait until their teams face off in the inaugural season of the FCFL! Unfortunately, the fans went 2-2 once more, but lets get a breakdown of each pick – bold indicates the winner of the game, italics indicate who the fans selected.

  • Minnesota Vikings vs. San Francisco 49ers
  • Tennessee Titans vs. Baltimore Ravens
  • Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers

Let’s check out some the most insane moments from this weekend – you know, just to hold us over until the NFL Conference Championships.

  • Richard Sherman continued to prove why he’s the best corner in the game!

  • Jonnu Smith pulled out an impressive TD for the Titans early on in the game, as shown below, but the real star of this moment was Dan Fouts and his *interesting* commentary

  • While the Texans were busy losing their 24-point lead over the Chiefs, Eric Fisher was busy giving himself a beer shower to celebrate one of many TDs for the Chiefs.

  • We don’t know who needs to hear this, but the yellow first-down marker is not always accurate. Maybe we need to say it a little bit louder for the Seahawks fans in the back that are still saying Jimmy Graham was short in the game-changing play that secured the Packers a win.

  • We hate to see BeastMode go, but we do love to see him impart some of his wisdom to all the athletes out there listening.

FAN Take: Winless in Seattle

Posted on December 31, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Well, here we are again, two years later. Writing another Fan Take on what Seattle could have done differently, and we really wish we weren’t. Up until Sunday night, we were excited to see Team Owner | Fan Captain Marshawn Lynch return to the NFL, to face off against former teammate and fellow Team Owner | Fan Captain Richard Sherman, no less. The fans went wild for the return of Beastmode and even threw Skittles on the field after his TD. But then Pete Carroll happened. Pete “how do I not have an endorsement with a chewing gum brand” Carroll, mismanaged his play clock at the end of the game, pretty much destroying any chance the Seahawks had at beating the Niners. Seahawks fans – and frankly, Saints fans as well – couldn’t believe the train wreck happening right in front of them. For those that missed the final game of the NFL Regular Season, the Seahawks were down 26-21 with 23 seconds left in the game, and managed to make it to the 1-yard line. Russell Wilson spiked the ball and Marshawn ran on to the field – a moment of redemption was coming and it was going to be glorious. Except it didn’t. Because the Seahawks wasted too much time getting players on and off the field, and were ultimately hit with a delay of game penalty, sending them back to the 6-yard line. They managed to get right up to the endzone on the fourth down and were literally INCHES away from having this game in the bag. But they weren’t close enough.

While some fans are losing their minds on a missed PI call that would have put the Seahawks back at 1st and Goal, Richard Sherman has already shut them down with some sound logic. Meanwhile, we need to know what the fans would do if they were running the show in Seattle. First of all, would you get rid of Pete Carroll as head coach for not managing the clock properly? It’s one thing to get a delay of game penalty, it’s another to have it cost you the NFC West title. Or would you wait see if he redeems himself during the wild card round? And after getting hit with that penalty, would you have gone for as many passes as Russell Wilson did? Or would you have let Marshawn do the thing you brought him back to do, and run it in for a touchdown? What about TE Jacob Hollister? Will you think twice about putting him in charge of getting you the win? With how insane that game was, we need to know what you think!

Power To The Fans!

FAN Take: Turkey Time

Posted on November 27, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

With Thanksgiving tomorrow, we find ourselves looking forward to spending time with our loved ones, eating our bodyweight in turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie, and of course, watching football. It has become a time-honored tradition to keep your tv on all day to have a constant source of football playing in the background, culminating with one team posted up in the middle of the field, enjoying a Thanksgiving feast. Hey, it’s the least the league can do if they’re making these players miss time with their loved ones.

Last year’s Thanksgiving Dinner Winners, the New Orleans Saints

As many of you know from our feature in the Washington Post, our first season is set for Summer 2020. With that time frame, would the fans be interested in seeing something similar to what the NFL does on Thanksgiving, but on the Fourth of July? Instead of turkey, do you want to see teams battle it out for the right to enjoy some grilled burgers and hotdogs mid-field? Do you want to see them celebrate with those firecracker popsicles (and then be forced to read the awful dad jokes printed on the popsicle sticks)? Or would you rather see games held on a different day that week to give the players an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day with their loved ones and a boatload of fireworks?

Sherman & Beastmode Reunited in the FCFL Owners Box

Originally published November 29, 2018

By Grant Cohen

We are beyond stoked to welcome Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman as the first two FCFL Team Owners and Fan Captains. Of course, both are Super Bowl Champs and future NFL HOF’ers, but, even more than that, they are great guys who have a passion for football and love being fans themselves.

What is particularly rad about their involvement with the FCFL is that they are not just passive owners of new teams in our league who will be sitting in the owners’ box eating lobster and wearing suits – I mean honestly, can you picture Marshawn suited up?? He came out to see our new potential venue this week and flew in on a Southwest flight rocking a hoodie that said “Beast Mode.”

Instead, as part of their role as Team Owner, they will also be serving as the Fan Captain – meaning they will be the head fan for their squads and will help their fanbases make the decisions for their team. In the coming weeks we will be announcing six more Team Owners / Fan Captains for each of the franchises in our inaugural season.

The fan involvement will start in early 2019 with Marshawn, Richard and the rest of the Fan Captains working with their team’s fans to come up with the best names, logos and color schemes for their teams. While Beast Mode and Sherman will certainly have their favorites and will help to pick the best options – their votes are worth just the same as their fans, because in the FCFL the fans call the shots and there are not any special powers for the Team Owners.

The teams will likely take on the personas of their Fan Captains, with Sherman’s reflecting his style as a highly-intelligent, trash-talking, shut-down defender, while Lynch’s squad will be built around the aura of Beast Mode, creating a hardnosed brand of smash-mouth football with a modern and brash team swagger.

And as the season approaches fans of each team will work with their Fan Captain to draft their team’s players and coaches, and when we take the field, fans will be calling the plays in real time. But they won’t be alone in their decision-making. The Fan Captains will be co-streaming their team’s games on Twitch where they will be providing commentary on what they are seeing develop on the field and guidance on what plays they think their fans should be calling… So get ready to hear Richard call a whole lot of the other team’s receivers “sorry” and for Marshawn to suggest runs up the middle on 3rd and 20.

Over the last couple of months we’ve been working with Richard, Marshawn and their respective teams on putting together the details around their involvement and we’ve been extremely impressed with how engaged both guys are. Not just with their fanbases, but also how much they’ve latched onto the concept of the FCFL – where the fans get to have their voice heard for reals.

When we explain the FCFL to people, the number one football situation they bring up is the ill-fated pass call that cost Marshawn and Richard’s Seahawks team the Super Bowl XLIX title. Recently we asked Marshawn what would have happened if the fans had been in charge that day and had called a run instead – not surprisingly he guaranteed it would have been a TD (actually he said it would have been 10 TD’s, which seems a bit extreme).

We are hard at work getting the other six Team Owners and Fan Captains locked in – some will be other familiar faces from the NFL and others will be famous fans from the wider world of entertainment, sports and gaming, as our goal is to create a league where fans of all kinds can find a team that they really connect with.

So if you have any ideas for folks that you think would make a killer Fan Captain – hit them up on Twitter and tell them to get involved, be sure to tag us @FCFLio and use the hashtag #PowerToTheFans so we can rally the support of all of our fans to get their attention!

Bobby Bones Is Your Newest FCFL Team Owner

Posted on May 30, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Bobby Bones, the man with a face for both television and radio is headed to the FCFL. No, he won’t be playing (although Bobby, we aren’t opposed to watching you try out for the league) – he is your latest Team Owner | Fan Captain! Before you ask, “what does an American Idol mentor, iHeartRadio host, New York Times best-selling author and Dancing with the Stars champion know about football?” Well guess what? Bobby has not only been one half of Roddick and Bones on Fox Sports Radio, but you also saw him a couple weeks ago covering the 2019 NFL Draft on both ABC and ESPN.

Didn’t catch the draft or his season of Dancing with the Stars? Then we’re sure you’ve heard him on the radio. Not only does he serve as the Vice President, Creative Director of iHeartCountry, but his radio show, The Bobby Bones Show, is syndicated all over the country across 140 stations, making his show the #1 Country morning show with millions of weekly listeners. He’s also the frontman of his band, Bobby Bones & The Raging Idiots, making Bobby a modern-day renaissance man. Talk about a “jack of all trades!” Really, because that’s exactly how the folks at ESPN would describe him.

FCFL CEO Sohrob Farudi, commented, “Country music and football go hand in hand. Adding one of Country Music’s biggest personalities – who was just recently an NFL Draft correspondent for ABC and ESPN – to our roster of Team Owners just makes perfect sense. What a lot of people don’t realize about Bobby is that he has incredibly deep sports knowledge besides being a fierce competitor, which we all saw when he won Dancing with the Stars. We’re excited to have him bring his legion of country music fans to the FCFL.”

When asked about why he became an owner in the FCFL, Bones, shared, “I’ve been a pretty proud football fan for as long as I can remember, but becoming an owner in the FCFL was a no-brainer because the fans literally lead the way and call the shots. It’s innovative, different and I’m excited for the #BTeam to join me in another crazy journey.”

Let’s get you caught up quickly on the other Fan Captains – we’ve announced Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, Prince Royce, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, and Kinda Funny. We don’t want to put words in Bobby’s mouth, but we think he’s looking forward to watching Ochocinco crumble in the FCFL just like he did on Dancing with the Stars. That’s right, he competed on the show as well, just in a different season. And well, he didn’t take home the Mirror Ball Trophy like Bobby did. We’re not taking sides here, just stating the facts. But he’s not here JUST for the trash talk – Bobby’s team is all about playing this game strategically.

Does all of that sound good to you? Are you like Bobby and planning on crushing this season by being disciplined and learning everything you possibly can about the game, your players and your opponents? Then register for Bobby’s team here and start making your voice heard! Team name submissions are OPEN, so act fast before we move on to the first round of voting! We know you’re going to come up with something great, we can just feel it!

The FCFL Has New Team Owners – They’re Kinda Funny

Posted on March 18, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

That’s right! The newest Team Owners in the FCFL are Kinda Funny, with co-founder Greg Miller serving as their primary Fan Captain. Fellow Kinda Funny founders, Tim Gettys and Nick Scarpino will join Miller in helping the fans shape the identity of their team.

You might be asking, what do a bunch of guys that talk about video games know about football? Our first response to that is HOW RUDE!?! After all, that’s how WE got here. We’re a bunch of people that love playing video games, including Madden, and love to think we know better than the coach on the field. These are our people. These are YOUR people.

What does Kinda Funny have to say about this new endeavor? “Our business is built on the idea that we aren’t making Kinda Funny for our Best Friends but that we’re making Kinda Funny with our Best Friends,” said Co-Founder Greg Miller who is excited to join the FCFL, highlighting the alignment of brands. “The opportunity to own a football team where our audience makes all the decisions is the most Kinda Funny thing we could ever do, and we can’t wait to get out there and make a fool of all the pretenders to the FCFL throne.”

“Look – the Co-Founders of the FCFL are legit gamers and Kinda Funny Best Friends,” said Patrick Dees, Chief Gaming Officer of the FCFL. “Everything Greg and Kinda Funny does is done FOR their fans and that’s what this league is all about. Personally, I wouldn’t sleep on this group to go all the way in season one. They are in it to win it all and frankly, the other captains and team owners better be ready.”

Previously, we announced Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch, Prince Royce and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson as Team Owners and Fan Captains, and they definitely have their work cut out for them. In their first official message to the fans, Kinda Funny is looking to send Prince Royce to the bottom of the Billboard charts and maybe help bail you out if you flip over Ochocinco’s car. The trash talking is definitely in full swing!

Does this team sound like the right one for you? Be sure to start submitting your team name ideas here before voting begins in a few weeks! Still not 100% sold and need a little help deciding? Take our FCFL Team Personality Analyzer to give yourself a little piece of mind!

Global Superstar Prince Royce is next FCFL Team Owner

Originally published January 28, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

FCFL fans, we know you’ve been excitedly awaiting news of who’s joining Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch as Fan Captains. Well, we’ve got some BIG news for you: as of today, multi-platinum award-winning Latin superstar Prince Royce has joined the league as a team owner and Fan Captain.

Royce is the first team owner announced that is not from the sports world. He’s a FAN just like the rest of us! When asked about why he became an owner in the FCFL, Prince Royce said “I’m a football fan and have always dreamt of owning a sports team – the fact that the FCFL combines sports with tech and gaming makes it the perfect league for me. I love everything about it, and it’s awesome that fans can really participate and be part of the game in a way they have never experienced before.”

All eight FCFL teams will be based in a single location – so instead of rooting for their hometown franchise, FCFL fans will join a team led by their favorite team owner. Royce, Lynch and Sherman – and the other five team owners who will be announced in the coming weeks – will work alongside their squad’s fans to create the brand, voice and personality of their respective teams, as well as helping their fans through key decisions like hiring (and firing) coaches, drafting players, and calling the plays in real-time.

FCFL Co-Founder and CEO, Sohrob Farudi, talked to Prince Royce’s fit with the FCFL, “Prince Royce is exactly the type of owner we are looking for in the FCFL. He is not only a mega star with a hugely engaged digital fan base, he’s also a passionate football fan and gamer. I’m excited to see how he and his fans shape his franchise over the coming months.”

For those of you who don’t know Prince Royce, what’s wrong with you? Ok, well, probably nothing, so here’s a little bit more about him:

In the past 8 years, multi-platinum award-winning, singer/songwriter Prince Royce has become a bona fide Latin superstar, scoring 16 #1 radio hits, 22 Latin Billboard Awards, 19 Premio lo Nuestro Awards, 19 Premios Juventud Awards, 6 Latin AMAs, and 12 Latin GRAMMY nominations.

Royce has a massive fan base with over 55 million followers on social media and he has sold out many of the most prestigious venues in Latin America and the United States.

Some of his collaborations include: Shakira, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, Snoop Dogg, Pitbull, Thalia, Maná, Daddy Yankee, Becky G, Ludacris, J Balvin, Bad Bunny, Farruko, and Maluma, among others. Prince Royce has also co-starred as Peter in the Fox Live musical broadcast of “The Passion” in 2016 and was part of the cast of Hulu’s hit series, “East Los High.”

August 9, 2018 was proclaimed “Prince Royce Day” in New York by Mayor Bill de Blasio, in recognition of his contributions to society and for being a role model to youth in his home town. He has been induced into the Bronx Hall of Fame with a street named after him, and run the New York City Marathon to raise funds and awareness on education in public schools and kidney disease.

Ask Johnny

Posted on August 20, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

While everyone was trying to get through the last Monday before college football officially returns, the folks at Bleacher Report set up an AMA with Johnny Manziel. You may remember him as the guy who looked really unhappy while waiting for his NFL Draft Pick to come through in 2014 (as pictured above), just one more Cleveland Browns QB to completely flop, or as the guy who couldn’t seem to stay out of trouble no matter how hard he tried. Either way, you know him, and the results of his AMA were pure gold. Some of the important things we learned about good ol’ Johnny Football are:

  1. He thinks he can out-chug Baker Mayfield (honestly, so do we)
  2. He thinks Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco) is one of the best coaches in the NFL
  3. He hasn’t ruled out a return to football 👀
  4. He’s got either Clemson or Alabama winning it all this year
  5. He’s picking the New Orleans Saints for this year’s Super Bowl Champions

It’s been about a year since we last had the Co-Founders sit down for an AMA on Twitch, and are planning on doing another one in the near future. But who else would the fans be interested in hearing from? The obvious answer is our Team Owners | Fan Captains, which certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but what about the athletes trying out for the league? We think the fans would love the opportunity to pick the brains of some of these guys ahead of our draft, just to make sure they are the right fit for their team. We’re not going to throw out a Field of Dreams “if you build it, they will come,” reference, but… we want to give the fans what they want! Let us know what you think!

Time To Pony Up, Shaq

Posted on July 16, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

When will people learn that the internet is forever? Clearly not soon enough, and nobody knows that better than Shaquille O’Neal. This morning Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr tweeted an unearthed clip of Shaq making some strong statements in regards to his coach at the time, Phil Jackson. He quite literally said he would kiss the feet of any other coach that made four NBA Finals appearances within five years. For those of you that haven’t been counting, Kerr reached that milestone this year after previously making appearances in 2015, 2017, and 2018 as well. But don’t worry, Shaq knows his number is up. He responded to Kerr, letting him know that he’s game.

We love it when athletes make outlandish statements, only to have to back them up after being called out on social media. While we don’t necessarily want to watch Shaq kiss Kerr’s feat, we’re glad someone dug that clip up for the world to enjoy. We’d ask the fans if they want to see some interesting bets go on between our athletes and Team Owners | Fan Captains, but we already know the answer is a resounding yes. But we are curious to hear from the fans what kind of bets they want to see! Should Bobby Bones and Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller make an arrangement for the loser to go on the other’s show and publicly call themselves the biggest loser of the FCFL? What about Marshawn Lynch having to take Richard Sherman or Prince Royce to a VERY expensive dinner at the nicest restaurant in Las Vegas? We’re all ears for your suggestions!

NFLPA Takes Over Family Feud

Posted on July 15, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Summer programming isn’t always the best, but we’re thankful we have Celebrity Family Feud to keep us entertained! Last night we tuned in to watch the NFL Players’ Association take over, with one team comprised of All-Stars, and one of Hall of Fame Legends. The NFLPA grouped Cameron Heyward (Pittsburgh Steelers, DE), Bradley Chubb (Denver Broncos, LB), Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens, QB), Stephon Gilmore (New England Patriots, CB), and Michael Thomas (New Orleans Saints, WR) for their “All-Star” team. They played for the Professional Athletes Foundation.

On the opposing side, we saw five Hall of Famers – Aeneas Williams (DB), Brian Urlacher (LB), Tim Brown (WR), Dermontti Dawson (Center), and Jackie Slater (OT) – who played for the Team Gleason Foundation. We don’t want to give too much of the episode away, but if there’s anything we learned last night, it’s that the NFL Legends are the team to beat! Could that be because they are more in tune with what’s happening outside the world of football? Or maybe it’s because they have a lot of free time in their retirement to brush up on past episodes of Family Feud – we’ll let you be the judge of that 😏

We love seeing our Team Owners | Fan Captains on reality tv shows – Bobby Bones walked away from Dancing with the Stars with the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy, and Prince Royce is officially a Lip Sync Battle champion – so which show should be next? And which of our Team Owners should make their debut? Do we want to see Richard Sherman take on American Ninja Warrior? Do you think Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller could hold his own on Wheel of Fortune (with one of the puzzles being Milk Mommies, of course)? If we’re guessing at what the fans want – it’s all of the above. We think you’d love to see any of our captains on any show, whether it’s something that tests their physical abilities or the mental aptitude. Let us know who you want to see, and on what show, in the comments!
