SNL Gets Into Gaming

Esports are finally getting their due – in addition to the enormous prizes for live tournaments, the integration of AI pop stars, and widespread viewership on Twitch and ESPN, they’re being covered by the ultimate program in pop culture: Saturday Night Live. In Saturday’s episode, featuring Chance the Rapper as both host and musical artist, Chance reprised a previous role of an MSG Knicks reporter being thrown into primetime coverage of a sport that isn’t basketball. This time around, he was required to cover the 2019 League of Legends World Championship – of course without any knowledge of the gaming community.

Do we think fans want to see more of esports outside of Twitch? ABSOLUTELY. And yes, the caps were necessary; they were a must to show how confident we are in this answer. There’s been talk about esports making its way into the Olympics, so why not have them spill out into the larger world of entertainment? Do we think the fans will appreciate how spot on Chance the Rapper’s impression of a traditional sports fan learning about esports was? Of course. Watching that sketch reminded us of every time we’ve found ourselves trying to explain how our league is the gamification of traditional football. One thing is for certain, we’ll be rooting for the mainstream expansion of esports while we wait for the FCFL to get the SNL-treatment.

Da Bears Rewrite History

Posted on September 3, 2019

With the NFL’s 100th season officially kicking off this Thursday, it was only fitting that the folks at NBC Sports got Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre and Bill Swerski’s Superfans together to discuss the historical rivalry between the Packers and Chicago Bears, or Da Bears, if you will. While Bill Swerski’s recollection of past events can be described as shaky at best, the segment has us instantly looking for old clips of the popular Saturday Night Live sketch, featuring the late Chris Farley.

Is this all a ploy to keep people from remembering how disastrous the Bears’ season was last year (*cough* Cody Parkey *cough*)? Or is this the Bears just falling back on the fan-favorite segment, which only narrowly beats out the Super Bowl Shuffle? We think a majority of fans will agree this is the latter, but for any fans of the Lions, Vikings, or Packers, they may go with the former. Either way, we hope the fans get a kick out of it. We’re patiently awaiting the review from former Chicago Bear and FCFL Co-Founder, Ray Austin!

A Hit on the Hitman

Posted on April 8, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

At the start of the weekend, we thought the biggest thing to happen in sports would be an upset in the NCAAM March Madness games, followed by highlights of SNL Cast Members Colin Jost and Michael Che getting their butts kicked at WWE’s Wrestlemania. To be clear, those things did happen – sorry Auburn fans. But at the same time, a legitimate fight broke out at Wrestlemania when Bret “The Hitman” Hart was in the ring being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

While delivering his speech during the induction ceremony, a 26-year old “fan” slid under the ropes of the wrestling ring and knocked The Hitman down. We’re not entirely sure how people are classifying this individual as a fan since we’re not running around knocking down our heroes, but okay. In true WWE fashion, plenty of other wrestlers stormed the ring to pull this guy off of Hart and escort him the heck on out of there. Instead of giving this individual any kind of facetime, please enjoy this phenomenal photo of Bret Hart in all his glory. If this isn’t inspiring some of you for your team’s uniform designs, we don’t know what will.

Don’t get us wrong, we love enthusiastic fans, but there are boundaries – both physical and metaphorical – that should not be crossed. We know you are the BEST fans around, so we expect nothing but the best kind of engagement from you. Who knows, maybe we will need to start keeping some badass WWE or UFC stars around just in case any of you try anything 😏
