The Patriots Have Fallen

Posted on November 4, 2019

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

The time has finally come – the New England Patriots are no longer undefeated! Yesterday, Tom Brady and his team lost to the underrated Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. The 37-20 loss for the Patriots will likely leave their defense with nightmares for a week after they allowed themselves to be blown out at home. Who knows, maybe this reality check will serve up some humble pie for the 6-time Super Bowl Champions – and push the Ravens to taking down the only remaining undefeated team in the league: the San Francisco 49ers.

What does that mean for the rest of the season? Well, for starters – ANYTHING Is possible. Sure, the Patriots typically have the easiest schedule every year considering how awful their division is, but if the Super Bowl favorites can lose to the Ravens the same week that the Miami Dolphins finally pull out a win, the Vince Lombardi Trophy could go to anyone. Well, anyone but the Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. We just hope the fans remember this during the inaugural season of the FCFL. Every team will have solid talent on their rosters, so everything comes down to them. Their play calling abilities will be what makes or break their team’s season. So, no matter how good one team may seem, the fans can change everything with their voting power. What else did you expect from the Fan Controlled Football League?

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

We aren’t even finished with NFL Preseason, and fans are already putting down money for the Super Bowl. According to Las Vegas sportsbooks, there are currently more bets on the Chicago Bears winning the Lombardi Trophy than any other team right now, with the Cleveland Browns close behind them. A senior oddsmaker for Caesars Sportsbook, Alan Berg, shared “every time the Bears go to the playoffs, the following year, the money just pours in.” Clearly, the fans are feeling optimistic! While they may have the most bets, the Bears only have the fourth-best odds (9-1) at Caesars, behind the New England Patriots (7-1), Kansas City Chiefs (7-1) and the New Orleans Saints (17-2). We’re curious to see how these odds change after the regular season has kicked off, especially for the teams that have had major roster changes in the last few months.

With the Fan Controlled Football League calling Las Vegas home, it can be expected that there will be fans betting on our games. Sure, fans can bet on the outcomes of each week’s games and who will make it to the championship game, but what about which fan will be crowned the “Top Fan,” with the highest FanIQ at the end of the season? What other aspects of the league would you want to throw a little money at? Would you bet on how many times Co-Founder Ray Austin gets in the broadcast booth and talks about his days with the Chicago Bears and New York Jets? Spoiler alert: that will happen at least once during any game where Ray is in the house. What about the number of times Team Owner | Fan Captain Bobby Bones comes up with an impromptu song during a livestream of his team’s game? We think the fans will want to get in on some of these more “fun” bets. Let’s make this interesting, fans!

FAN Take: Try Again, WWE

Posted on May 22, 2019

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Thanks to Hall of Famer Mick Foley, the WWE just unveiled their 24/7 Championship belt on Monday Night Raw. The belt is defended 24/7, meaning that as long a referee is present, someone can challenge the holder for the belt anytime and anywhere, including across all of WWE’s brands. We’re just going to put this out there: that is NOT a belt we would be trying to defend based on looks alone. We’re not the only ones who think so, as WWE fans took to Twitter to make their disappointment known. “Great idea, HORRIBLE belt” seems to be the sentiment fans are sharing, with some going as far as to redesign the belt altogether. Fans aren’t the only ones taking aim at the design of the belt. Waffle House was quick to point out that it CLEARLY looks like it belongs in one of their restaurants. Now we’re just waiting for the WWE and Waffle House to give the fans what they want: a 24/7 title match to be held IN one of the thousands of Waffle Houses across the country.

Fans, what do you want the FCFL Championship trophy to look like? Do you want something timeless like the NFL’s Vince Lombardi trophy? Do you want to see something gaudy, like the Stanley Cup (which also serves as an excellent chalice…just something to think about)? Would It be comical to give an entire team of large, burley guys something small enough to fit in the palms of their hands? Or are you imagining something unlike any trophy you’ve ever seen before? After all, this is the first league of its kind, so it’s only fitting that we do something completely unique. No matter what your preference is, let us know!
